Norbert is a baby dragon, a Norwegian Ridgeback that belonged to Hagrid. Hagrid won him as an egg in a game of cards in the local pub. He said he couldn’t tell whom the man he had gotten the egg from looked like, since he kept his hood down. Hagrid hatched the egg in his fire illegally, since it is illegal to own a dragon, and told no one but Harry, Hermione and Ron about it. Norbert was to be fed a bucket of brandy mixed with chicken blood every half hour. The three of them were helping Hagrid feed Norbert for a while, but then he bit Ron (Norbert’s fangs appeared to be poisonous; the cut had turned a nasty shade of green by the next morning), and became quite uncontrollable. They eventually convinced Hagrid to get rid of the dragon, which they did by giving him to a few of Charlie Weasley’s friends, since Charlie was studying dragons himself. Harry and Hermione were caught out of bed, but only after they managed to send Norbert on his way to Charlie.
