This card was #3 on my Top 10 list.

One of the chief inspirations for Bloomburrow was the Redwall series, in which seemingly meek woodland creatures like mice make an outsized impression – and sometimes even change the world. Heartfire Hero is a mouse very much in that tradition, combining with other ordinary-looking cards to deal as much as 24 damage on the second turn, in a horrifyingly mana-efficient manner that scared the pants off everyone who had never seen a combo like that before. This deck actually led to Monstrous Rage getting banned in the Arena-only Alchemy format. It’s a card in the great tradition of “I’m dead, but that was kind of cool” decks like Blazing Shoal. Oh, and that reminds me: don’t forget that you can play him with Blazing Shoal in Modern and casual!

This card did not make my Top 10 of 2024 list.

Talk about punching above your weight. Heartfire Hero is a little mouse with a big stab, thanks to how well it pairs with other cards. We have seen other creatures that “explode” , but Heartfire Hero is a pro at growing, both with its own abilities and with other pump spells. And when it’s time for the mouse to go out in a blaze of glory, it turns out that there’s a perfect Standard friend for it: the adventure component of Callous Sell-Sword, Burn Together, which both triggers valiant and weaponizes its power. On its own, these combine for 4 damage split between two targets for two mana…but it’s never just that much, and pairing this with proper pump spells can result in a crazy amount of damage as early as turn 2. As far as simple combos go, this one shines for being efficient, and it doesn’t hurt that both Mouse and Soldier were quite well-supported in Bloomburrow.
