Pojo's HeroClix "Click of the Day"
WMNOE |
Mars, the war planet, fourth planet of the sun, and home
to millions of martians in the DC Universe. No really. Martian culture is
eons old, and during it's past two types of martians evolved, the pale
Martians and the green Martians. The pale Martians attempted a coup to rule
the entire planet, and were rebuffed, being sentenced to the martian version
of the Phantom Zone, where they would later emerge as the Hyperclan.
Martian civilization and culture were far more
advanced that human civilization. Or at least it was...
Enter Ma'alefa'ak, a rogue who committed the worst crime on Mars, Mind Rape.
Ma'alefa'ak was sentenced to being mind-wiped and his innate telepathic
abilities shunted; he was given a new role as priest/scientist. Slowly his
memory returned, and he plotted to destroy the entire Martian race for what
they did to him. He created a plague which virtually wiped out the rest of
Mars, with the exception of one martian, his own twin brother J'onn J'onnz.
After his family died, J'onn quickly figured out who was responsible for the
plague and confronted his own brother, and seemingly killed him. J'onn then
began to wander the deserted planet, slowly going insane.
The time was now the 1950's, and an Earth scientist named Dr. Erdel was
working on a machine that could communicate across space and time.
Unfortunately he
didn't complete it properly, and activated it. It reached across space and
captured J'onn, bringing him to Earth. When Dr. Erdel touched J'onn, he was
telepathically brought up to date as to J'onn's life history. Erdel nursed
J'onn back to health and
created a new life for him, as John Jones, detective.
He kept this identity for quite awhile, and became a
super-hero. Changing identities several times, he finally decided on the
Martian Manhunter, and helped co-found the Justice League of America. He's
been involed in virtually EVERY incarnation of the League ever since,
including the current incarnation in both the comics and on TV. (Most of
this origin story was paraphrased from
http://www.comicboards.com/dcguide/Who/MartianManhunter_Bio.htm, which
is a great site).
I was quite disapointed that J'onn wasn't included in the Hypertime set, but
I'm especially pleased that he's in the Cosmic Justice set. J'onn's powers
are
potentially the strongest in the DCU (though we don't really get to see him
exercise them very often). His Heroclix doppleganger is quite strong, and
duplicates
MOST of his great abilities. Let's look at them, shall we?
First and foremost, J'onn's a flyer, and has a ranged attack of 6. He gets
Stealth for the first click of his speed dial, with a starting value of 10.
After Stealth he gets Phasing for a few clicks, which is useful. Super
Strength for the whole attack dial is
awesome, but he only gets a 10 starting value. I don't understand why it's
so low, but I guess WK had their reasons. J'onn will stick around QUITE a
while with Impervious, Invulnerability and Toughness for his defense dial,
with a starter of 16. Finally his damage is 3 with Perplex for half the
dial. Overall a nice set of values, but a tad expensive at 177. Still, I'd
love to play him on a Justice League team.
The sculpt of J'onn isn't all that great, but really what can you do? His
costume is teeny-weeny briefs and a blue cape. Even the best action figure
of J'onn is pretty static. Of course, he's a level 5 unique, and he's in the
new set, meaning he's pretty expensive. Currently he's selling for between
$20 and $45, and could quite possibly go higher in the future.
My Ratings:
Playability 4 of 5
Collectability 4 of 5.
Not a five star like I thought he would be, BUT, he's still a great piece.
Next week, someone else's picks. Hope you enjoyed mine. |

If you notice a lot of Cosmic Justice’s uniques are over
a hundred build points. With that in mind I don’t expect to see a lot of 2
unique teams in tourneys. However each individual unique provides a massive
amount of power and abilities to the table, thus the high point cost. I
think the best for his point cost his Amazo, check him out if he you don’t
know his dial.
Well back to today’s high costing unique, the man of the hour, J'Onn J'Onzz
A.K.A Martian Manhunter. One of the founders of the JLA so no surprise he
has the JLA team ability. Superman protects America; the Martian Manhunter
protects the rest I believe is what they say, so lets check his dial to see
if he is up to it.
At 177 build points he is in no way a cheap figure for your team but his
dial and team ability combined with his power pays for that. He starts off
with stealth on his first click with ten movement, carry around Robin or
Batman, or anyone with the Batman team ability and you should be able to
wreck havoc on your opponent’s forces unless they have that ever so handy
Superman ability. With only six range though he is going to need that
stealth to get close enough to your opponent’s team.
With three damage his whole dial and perplex his first four clix and like
Son of Darkseid Superman he as super strength is whole dial, he is a machine
for dealing out brute force. His defense is a little low but he has
impervious for one click, then invariability for one click, than toughness
for the rest of his dial. Keep a medic near by because with his low defense
he should be hard to hit after he loses stealth. He should be able to stick
around though with his 10 clicks of health.
In a nutshell he is a good character to use on your team but your team
should be based around him. If you do not own a Martian Manhunter try to
pull him from a booster because from what I heard he is a very popular piece
going for around 30-40 dollars. Pay the green to get the green man.
200 Point Game- 0 out of 5 (under no circumstances should he be used here)
300 Point Game- 2.5 out of 5 (like most CJ uniques not many should be used
here but maybe able to work here)
400 Point Game- 3.5 out of 5 (should be able to shine here but not my first
choice to put on a team here) |

To start off, Martian Manhunter has Stealth. Great for
flying characters because they don't have to cut their movement in half when
moving out of hindering terrain. After he loses his Stealth he gets Phasing
for 3 clicks but thats all for movement abilities. He has Super Strength for
his whole dial(which is 10 clicks long).Impervious on his first click and
Invulnerability on his second click. After his second click he gets
toughness for the rest of his dial. Perplex for his first 4 clicks. He only
has 6 range with 1 arrow though. Overall he seems to be an okay character
except for his point cost. At 177 points I would like to see some more
abilities *cough*Shape Change*cough*.
200 pt.-2 of 5
300 pt.-3 of 5
400 pt. and above-3 of 5

Yo! today I'm back (after a week and a 1/2 vacation) And
I re-enter the
heroclix arena with a review of the Martian Manhunter Unique. This is
probably the COOLEST DC character ever (IMO) . Supes and Bats can only get
so old ya know?
Since I'm quite tired and lazy, I'll simply give y'all a link to the
homepage of the MM
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figuregallery.asp?unitid=3396
The Review:
lets see..177 pts..?! thats already 1 team too many he can't get on. But he
more than pays for his price
His speed is 'up there' with 10 movement, PLUS Hover/Soar PLUS stealth or
Phasing. This guy gets anywhere easily..and can bring a buddy too.
Heck..whats that JLA team ability!? wow..this guy really is on the move..his
attack is decent with 10+S.S. slowly decreasing...nothing specatcular.. His
defense is AWESOME! 16 + Impervious, or invuln or toughness. Damage is
decent at 3+Perplex. 6 range with 1 attack is just about so-so at
least he has a ranged attack...But wait what does he even use for the
range?!
The Verdict: Worth the points. Why the range again?
100: N/A
200: 3.5/5 No way you can support this guy...he's a one man army..
300: 4.5/5 taxi he aint. But more room makes him useable
300+: 5/5 no problem here
Sealed/Draft: 4/5 nab him just to have him. Team him with lessers or
something. |
