Pojo's HeroClix "Click of the Day"
WMNOE |
Angelus:
Here's another Top Cow character I'm unfamiliar with. You'd think that being
a comic fan I'd know these guys, but, well...you'd be wrong. Probably why
I'm
not head over heels jump up and down in rapture with Indyclix. Now if they
had done a Grendel figure, and maybe an Argent figure too, I'd be happy. But
oh
well, you can't have everything, but I can try.
The Unique Angelus comes to us from "The Darkness" series, where
he's...oops, SHE'S (couldn't tell from WK's picture really) The Darkness'
arch enemy. Angelus and The Darkness both have to inhabit human bodies
in order to fight it out. Currently The Darkness is Jackie Estacado, a mafia
hit man. Angelus, well, she is inhabiting the wife of Jackie's Mafia
Boss. Confused? I sure am. But wait, it gets
better. Apparantly Angelus usually takes over the host's body AND mind, but
apparently Mrs. Franchetti has a pretty strong personality, and is in
control.
Or something like that. Hey, I'm not up on my Darkness, OK? Don't own a
single issue of it.
So, basically you've got a nasty angel with some pretty nifty super powers.
Obviously she's a flyer, with 9 clicks of health, 1 range 6 attack, and only
costs 95 points. Her stats are decent, 10 Speed, 10 Attack, 15 Defense and 3
Damage to start. She gets one click of Poison, then B/C/F (hmm...a flying
B/C/F. That's a fairly rare combination; a quick check finds that she's only
1 of 4 clix that have this combo, the others are Deathbird, Sauron and the
Vampire Batman. The first two are cheaper than Angelus (in the 70
point range), and Bats is a little more expensive. She's going to stick
around with Invulnerability, Toughness and Battle Fury too.
The Ranged Attack is nice, but you can only use it for the first two clicks,
then Battle Fury overrides it, so it's not all that useful. 3 Damage is
excellent, but again, you'll only use that for a ranged attack, otherwise
you'd go with BCF. Poison is nice, but one click of health only. So she
won't make a good sniper, but she will make a nasty melee attacker,
especially with the combo of Flying BCF.
Not a whole lot of collector movement on this gal however. She's selling for
between $10 and $20, and there aren't a whole lot of sellers either. Don't
know if she's more rare than a standard Unique, or if she's just not that
popular. I'd think the flying BCF would make her appealing, but then I guess
I might be wrong.

Angelus
Here's a Unique that lives up to the title. There's facets of Angelus that
you'll find on few or no other clix in the game. Some of these facets,
though, will pose a challenge for using her.
Let's start with the good stuff. Angelus is one of two flyers in Indyclix
(Unique Hecate is the other). What makes that ability even more significant
is that only four other Indy characters have Leap/Climb and the Indy maps
are scarce for elevated terrain (two structures with a ladder each on the
outdoor map). Mobility is at a premium in this set. If you can place Angelus
and an ally with good range on one of those structures, you're set up pretty
well to snipe those Indyclix figures without ranged attack.
Angelus is also the sole clix with Poison and Invulnerability. Thus, basing
your opponents for easy damage is an option, though one you probably won't
be able to use that often. There's enough characters either with good
defensive abilities or high potential damage (Blades/Claws/Fangs) in
Indyclix that it may not be worthwhile.
After the first click, Poison gives way to the Indyclix-heavy BCF. But what
stands out on this figure is she'll keep it until she's knocked out. Only a
handful of characters in the game have the ability longer (throughout their
dials), including Lady Deathstrike, various versions of Wolverine and that
other Unique flyer.
Battle Fury crops up at the third level, negating her 6 range. We can't even
say that BF benefits her as protection against Mind Control, since only two
Indyclix characters have that ability. And one of them is, yes, that other
Indy Unique flyer, so just write off MC as a common threat. The flip side of
that you'll want to be in base contact to utilize BCF, plus Angelus can't be
carried under the new rules, regardless of how many flyers are in Indyclix.
The only real problem BF poses is that your opponents will focus on getting
Angelus damaged until she reaches it and play keepaway from there.
My only complaint is the sculpt. Y'know, there's enough times that Wizkids
gives characters stats that are inaccurate, so why not fidget with a
character's appearance by at least slipping a speedo over a pair of
buttocks? Call me John Ashcroft, but I'm putting a dab of Whiteout on
Angelus' behind. LOL.
In summary, use Angelus to make good use of elevated terrain for your
figures, go base to base with other characters if you can benefit from
Poison and don't sweat Battle Fury all that much. Oh, and keep her butt off
the table when playing kids.
