The original Supergirl was Kal-El’s first cousin Kara. She and her family
survived Krypton’s explosion when the chunk of the planet that they lived on
just flew away intact, complete with it’s own air supply. They were happy
for a little while, until the actual chunk of rock started turning into
Kryptonite. Kara’s dad devised a great plan, he’d put a layer of steel (or
lead can’t remember) over the actual rock, and they’d be safe…unfortunately
for them, an asteroid shower punched holes in the shield, and they all died.
Except for Kara, who was placed in a rocket ship and sent to her Cousin Kal.
She arrived in an issue of Adventure Comics, with a memorable cover which
has just been turned into a beautiful statue by DC Direct.
But somehow I don’t think that this Heroclix is her. I think this one is
based off of the post-Crisis Supergirl, who as a ball of proto-plasm that
could shape-change. That Supergirl ended up merged with another young lady
into a third Supergirl, who then became an angel. The most recent SG has
just appeared (in Superman/Batman #8, drawn by Michael Turner – selling out
at comic shops everywhere), and should be closer to the Silver Age
character.
Somehow, I was expecting a slightly better Heroclix for Supergirl, but I
guess looking at her stats, and knowing that most, if not all her powers are
basically the same as Superman’s, only less powerful. Come to think of it,
this may be the silver-age SG, since the Matrix-Supergirl (the second one),
was a shape-changer, and therefore would have plasticity.
Not that she’s a scrub by any stretch. 10 attack to start for the EXP and
VET with range, and the Superman TA doesn’t suck. Plus she’s got
Superstrength again, with range, so she can just pick up objects and heave
them at you if necessary. But, again, I was hoping for a little more. I’m so
glad I pulled the VET version last night though, now I can try her on a
team! I’d suggest you do too.
The alter-ego LE Kara Zor-El is a slightly cheaper version of the VET, with
the LSH TA rather than the Superman TA. Nothing to write home about, but
nice if you win it regardless.
Nifty sculpt too, not great, but not bad. Another Heroclix that captures
the flavor of the character, but doesn’t really set your heart on fire.
Current REV set prices on ebay are running at a high of 18 bucks, to a low
of about 4 dollars, with most of them in the 8-12 dollar range. That’s
really pretty high for an REV set, there’s quite a bit of demand for the
maiden of steel.
I don’t see any completed auctions for the LE, so I guess it hasn’t been
issued yet. I’d guess it will trade in the $45-75 range, but I could be
wrong.
My ratings – playability first, then Collectability.
Rookie – 3,3
Exp – 3,4
Vet – 4,4
LE – 4,5
Next week…more Unleashed maybe? Something else perhaps. The answer is…I
don’t know!

Ah pumpkin head herself, Supergirl. Remember how I mentioned that there were
one or two sculpts that I thought were poorly done. Yes, you guessed it,
this is one of them. I assume that’s supposed to be a steel rod or something
that she’s ripped in half, but it kinda looks like aluminum foil. Plus, why
would she be flying into battle with a ripped steel rod anyhows. I mean, it
doesn’t make sense. Oh well, let’s take a look at her stats.
Her combination of powers makes her look nice on paper, I mean, running shot
with 10 speed (5 while actually using the power), 3 damage and the Superman
Ally TA. However, her range of 6 can drop your options a little bit. I’m in
no way trying to say that her effective range of 11 is bad, just not super
fantastic when compared to other Running Shot-ers. She maintains nice speed
values down the dial, her last click being the only one sporting a 7 speed
(the others are either 10 or 8). Her attack values leave a little something
to be desired, having a 10 on the first click only, then three 9’s, two 8’s,
two 7’s, and finishing off with a measly 6. She has Super Strength all along
her dial, which provides a nice way to boost some damage since she doesn’t
have any damage powers. Her defense quite frankly is pathetic: Starting at
15, but for only 2 clix, followed by a dial full of 14, with the last click
dropping to 13. Her damage is nicely consistent: 3 for the first three clix,
then dropping to 2 for the rest. Unfortunately, that 2 + SS damage doesn’t
do too much with a 6 attack value.
Ultimately, it seems to be like she’s a big 150 point target. She’s clearly
not designed to be a primary attack, but she does have the makings of a
versatile back-up. Personally, I would use her avidly to take out those
stealthed guys, especially Outwitters (who, mind you, absolutely own her)
and Perplexers. She could early on provide some armored taxi service, while
taking potshots at the enemy whenever possible. Then, once your troops are
in position, have her just go after anyone trying to hide in hindering.
She’s especially good at nailing those guys using an object as they’re
hindering. Just charge her up, grab the object from under them, and lay the
smack down. And of course, she does nicely when combined with wildcards, so
others can take full advantage of her x-ray vision.
Ratings:
100 points: N/A
200 points: 1.5 out of 5 (Too many points not to get a beatdown attacker)
300 points: 1.5 out of 5 (See above)
400+ points: 3.5 out of 5 (Maybe a little higher than what she deserves, but
the higher the point total, the better she becomes)
Next time… they haven’t even told ME yet. Ooooh, that means a surprise is
instore. |
