Mr. Sinister is old.  Not as old as say…Apocalypse or…err…Galactus, but he might be around the same age as Logan.  A former scientist who fell in with the aforementioned Apocalypse, and who was transformed into the being we see today by…err…Apocalypse.  Hmm…He has a thing for Scott Summers and Jean Grey because supposedly they’ll create the ultimate mutant.  He was the villain behind such HORRIBLE cross-overs as Inferno and Mutant Massacre, (though I think the REAL villain there was Chris Claremont et. Al.)  Cyclops eventually killed Mr. Sinister, but you know what they say in comics…there’s dead and then there’s Bucky dead.  Turns out Mr. Sinister was only dead…not Bucky dead, so he’s come back since then several times.

You know, for 106 points I expect more than a 9 attack and 2 damage to start.  But the suckiness doesn’t stop there.  Sure that 17 defense is really nice, and with his defense powers and long dial, he’ll be in the game for a long time, but that doesn’t mitigate the low values on the rest of the dial.  He does have Perplex and Shape Change, coupled with Psychic Blast, which, if he had a better ranged attack and damage, might not be bad…but the max range he could do would be 5, and there’s lots more figures with better stats that can do 5 damage at range.  Oh wait, that’s if you can hit with that attack value.  Heh.

Is he a bad figure?  No, not really.  Is he a good figure?  No.  Not at all.  He’s just another in the long line of truly mediocre Uniques, which is really too bad, since he’s always been one of my favorite X-Men villains, not that I have very many of those!  Is he a tournament quality figure?  I don’t think so.  I mean, I wouldn’t waste 106 points on him in any game, but then again, maybe you would.  You’ll probably lose though.

And now we come to the part I know you’ve all been waiting for…Wildwill’s Patented Price Guide!  Yes, I know, I know, you love this section don’t ya?  In fact, I know you love it so much, I’m going to start doing this the same way each and every review.  I’m not going to talk about sculpts anymore, unless they are truly stunning.

Pricing Commentary:  Mid-Level quality pricing right now.  Any time your Unique costs you less than the price of two boosters, buy the boosters instead…in two boosters you have a 1 in 3 chance of getting a Unique, and if you don’t, then you have 8 figures to trade away.

My Ratings:

Playability 3

Collectability 3

Next time:  We were supposed to review this guy almost a month ago, but somehow we forgot…you know him, you love him, he’s the topic of an Ozzy Osbourne song…

Monger Mr. Sinister Unique
Marvel Ultimates #090

The first time I ever heard of this character, it was in the Marvel Vs. card game. I don’t read comic books and I had no clue who exactly he was. From the stats on the cards I saw, he seemed to be a powerful figure and I assumed the HeroClix version would be somewhat similar, especially a unique that costs 106 points. My friends found a sneak peak for this figure on the Wizkids website and were all talking about what powers he might have. Once the stats on all the figures were released – we were extremely depressed. Not only did this figure have NONE of the powers we had imagined, his playability was nowhere near his 106 point value – it should have been somewhere around 60.

Speed / Range: No powers at all, none. The range and the actual base speed are – well, average at best. I’ve seen better stats on SHIELD figures…

Attack: The Psychic blast is a great touch, but the attack value is so low, it doesn’t do the power justice. One thing good about this figure is – although his attack value is only a 9, the average defensive values of figures are dropping as well! After his three clicks of psychic blast, he picks up energy explosion. This might do you some good if you play against a lot of weenie based teams, but against stronger figures, he’ll really struggle. When Mr. Sinister takes a few punches, his offensive capabilities take a serious dive.

Defense: I would have been happier if they would have cut back on the regeneration and given this figure at least one click of impervious. We’re seeing the power more and more on unique figures, I really expected to see this one with it! He does have six straight clicks of damage reducing abilities (mostly toughness). You can’t push this guy over with weak figures though; it will take a few solid hits. I don’t understand the four straight clicks of regeneration at the end of his dial. I would be mad if I was on his last click, rolled for regeneration, got a 5, healed him 3 clicks, and came to discover I’m still on regeneration. We saw this same thing on “The General” from DC. I really feel they waste points when they do this. As I said earlier, put those points elsewhere, like adding some impervious or raising his attack to a double digit number!

Damage: Lots of base 2 damage, five straight clicks to be exact. The two clicks of perplex was an odd addition. I would have preferred a base three damage though. With the perplex sitting where it does, you’ll find yourself trying to decide whether to increase the attack value or the damage. On a figure that weighs in at 106 pts, you shouldn’t need to worry about this! After the two clicks of perplex, Mr. Sinister picks up shape change. This is really a poor mans version of super senses, as it only works on a roll of 6. I’m not a huge fan of the ability and I’m happy that we don’t see it used very often. Sad enough for Sinister though, he just happened to find it! The last two clicks of his dial give us outwit, but face it – at this point, he’s going to be KO’ed very soon! Outwit is not going to save him and in my opinion, it was another waste of points that could have been better spent.

Overall: I’ve honestly seen 50 pt figures with better stats. Who would that be? Veteran Gambit is MUCH better then Mr. Sinister in my opinion. I can make a LONG list of figures under 100 pts that are better. I really see no reason to play this figure, even in sealed or draft tournaments. He takes up a large amount of space and cannot hold his own against 60-70% of the field. Definitely NOT one of my top 20 picks from the Ultimates set! He might find himself in the bottom 10…
