The Ragin’ Cajun…one of my (and about a billion other comic fans) favorite X-Men. His sculpt captures him very well in my opinion. They even gave him his bo staff. The position is a little awkward…I would have preferred it to look a little more like he was throwing the cards instead of just holding them. But other than that, there is only 1 major objection I have to his sculpt…his eyes! As anyone who is a Gambit fan can tell you, Gambit has all black eyes with red irises. This is his most distinct physical mutant feature and it appalls me that WizKids left this out of his otherwise good sculpt. Fortunately, it’s an easy thing to repaint.

Looking at his dial, the Rookie is a nice cheap short range blaster. For a mere 28 points you get stealth, a decent attack value, and Gambit’s explosive card tricks. He’s a decent piece, but nothing phenomenal (especially compared to his other versions) so don’t expect to see him played outside of the occasionally 100 point X-Men teams.

The Experienced version gives you a lot more playability…attached to a 16 point price increase. However, those 16 points give you a very nice click, featuring perplex and a higher attack and defense, tacked on to the front of the Rookie’s dial. His newly added perplex means that he’s less of an attacker and more of a support role, putting those unorthodox thieving skills to good use. However, he can still take some nice 1 damage pot shots from stealth, along with providing the occasional Energy Explosion, making your opponent regret clumping their force.

The Veteran is everything you liked about the Experienced but more, for a mere 7 point increase. Just pushing past the 50 point mark, the V Gambit is the best of the bunch hands down. For those extra points, you get a base 2 damage on his first 2 clix (this is the only version that has anything other than 1 base damage), an increased range from 4 to 6, and increased defense to a greatly respectable 17, a second click of RCE, and 4th click of Stealth, an speed boost to 8, and an attack value that doesn’t drop as fast as before. Is that enough for you? While he won’t be taking down Thor any time soon, he can sure make your opponent cringe until he’s dealt with.

Overall, Gambit’s playability really comes from his stealthed perplex (sorry, but the Rookie just doesn’t cut it when you account for the E and V versions). On top of that, he makes a decent secondary attacker (especially the V) and don’t forget to use his Energy Explosion whenever useful. So often I have seen him overlooked as simply a stealthed perplexer, that his real versatility in being able to perplex AND attack strongly. Also, don’t be afraid to push his V version. While he does lose perplex and that 17 defense, he picks up the ability to do 4 damage at range, and his 16 defense is still highly respectable. Plus, if you play him with other X-Men, you can just trade that click of damage around to someone who has Regen, or someone who can be easily healed. All in all, I’d say that Vet Gambit definitely rivals Vet Mystique (who also costs 51 points) for the most versatile and useful perplexer.
