There is alot of new figures out there, but alot of
the mail I get is about old figures. So this is
classic figures week here on POJO. I hope you enjoy
Today we'll be reviewing SHAZAM! from
Unleashed
I've always liked Shazam! because he's
so powerful everyone must but an ! in his name.
Even Superman is just Superman, not Superman!
Unique, 166 points, 11 Clicks, Team Ability JSA
MOVEMENT:
The first four clicks are Hyper Sonic Speed with an
11 as the highest.
ATTACK:
(10, 10 with Quake), (10,9,9,8,8,8,7,7 with Super
Strength)
DEFENSE:
(16,15,15 with Impervious), (14,14,13 with
invulnerabilty), (15,15,15,14 with toughness)
ˇ
He does have outwit after he loses HSS so he can be
useful
ˇ
Quake and Exploit Weakness do not work with HSS, and
you will play a hundred game without choosing to use
Quake.
ˇ
You will play 99 out of a hundred games without
using Exploit weakness over HSS
ˇ
Black Adam is VERY similar and much less points.
ˇ
Fortitude is a must, with his low defense, but many
defensive abilities
ˇ
Veteran Superman is over 250 points and has many
similarities to Shazam!
ˇ
At 166 he's over costed, by about 10 points.
OVERALL
Well time tested Shazam! has proven to not too
useful. But perhaps with fortitude and Incontact
his time could come again. No wait...Black Agam is
30 times better.
2.5 Out of a Possible 5 Thumbs Up!
Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clix.

Shazam! U
Personally, I love
this figure because I love the character.
However, I find it difficult to use him
effectively in competitive games. Captain
Marvel is one of my favorite members of The
Justice Society, simply because he’s like
Superman, but cheesier and more golden age-like.
Sculpt: I think
it looks good. I personally would have liked him
to be in his classic “hand on his hips” pose
with the Cheshire Cat grin on his face. However,
what I don’t like, aside from the fact that the
gold portions on this were painted yellow to
make the Kingdom Come version more marketable to
people obsessed with shiny objects, is that the
cape looks and feels really flimsy. I feel that
I’m going to break it whenever I bring old Billy
to a friend’s house to use him. That, and none
of the ones I’ve seen have had the eyebrows or
the button on his costume painted, but those are
minor quibbles at best.
Playability:
Well, he has the dreaded activation click. I
hate these simply because most of the figs that
have it are never caught in a battle situation
in their alter ego forms. It’s just annoying to
have, and most figures that do have it, if there
is a comparable form of that character without
it, cost more than the ones that don’t; they
actually charge extra for activation clicks...
look at the Captain Atom figure compared to his
LE version; the LE costs more for an activation
click, but otherwise the powers are the same.
He’s straight up
brick. He flies, and that’s great. HSS makes him
annoying if you use hit and run tactics, but
then you won’t get to use his Exploit Weakness
during combat like that. After he loses HSS, he
gets outwit, making him annoying even after he’s
lost his best offensive power. The main problem
that I have with him is that his stats become
pitiful late dial. 2 damage with 8 AV six clicks
into his lifespan isn’t really worthy of the
character, who tends to hit for so much more,
even defeating the likes of Superman (although
who hasn’t defeated him recently?).
Also of note is that
his hypersonic speed doesn’t work with any of
the powers he has at the beginning of his dial;
you can’t quake or exploit weakness with
hypersonic speed. He loses Quake two clicks in
to gain Super Strength, which is good, and which
works with HSS, but then his damage drops from
four to three, which is not good. When he takes
four clicks of damage and loses HSS, he then
gains outwit, at the cost of EW. I honestly
would have liked it the other way around…
Recommended Feats:
only two - three really come to mind:
Damage Shield
looks good, as he’s going to be mixing it up a
lot in close combat, since he has no range
powers.
Double Time
will save you some time getting him off of that
activation click. I found it annoying when I
used him that I kept healing him to his
powerless Billy Batson click. I highly recommend
this if you have a medic, and want to keep him
on his HSS clicks, or if you want to really
press the attack at the beginning of the game.
And, to a lesser
extent, Fortitude. However, fortitude
seems like a huge waste of points if your
opponent didn’t feel the need to use any outwit
or exploit weakness. I never liked it,
preferring to use the points on a fig that’s
more annoying than outwit is alone.
So, as much as I like
Captain Marvel here, I think his power
combinations (none of which work) cost him at
way more than he’s worth point wise. For theme
teams, he’s great, but usually for those people
gravitate towards Black Adam for the JSA themes
since he’s easier to use there.
So I’d have to give
him a 3.25 out of five for casual play, since he
is still a threat when he gets to his HSS
clicks. I’d give him a 3.75 for theme team play
because he usually gets overshadowed by the
cheaper, more easily played Black Adam on JSA
teams. And the JSA doesn’t need two figs with
activation clicks (I’m looking at you, Hourman…).

Shazam!
It’s the second day on this theme week, and today we
have a figure of the
character LEGALLY known as Shazam! and now I’ll tell
you some about this
character, which is among my favorites. This guy’s
name is Captain Marvel
(actually, is Billy Batson; Captain Marvel is the
name of his alter ego).
So, why is he known as Shazam!? Well, the problem is
that Marvel had been
using the name Captain Marvel before DC, so they
went to court and there DC
lost, therefore they had to give up the right to use
it; that’s why this guy
series are always called “The Power Of Shazam” and
stuff, or why the click
is named Shazam!
Now, about the character itself: despite orphaned at
a very early age (I
think he was like 2) the young Billy was growing up
very well: not only he
made a living out of selling papers, but he was a
very good student and also
a good person. And that’s why the dying, powerful
wizard Shazam made sure he
found him, and then he granted him powers, as he
didn’t want to die and
leave the forces of good and evil unbalanced. He
granted the boy the wisdom
of Salomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of
Atlas, the power of
Zeus, the courage of Achilles and finally the speed
of Mercury (Hermes in
greek) If you have any knowledge about greek-roman
mythology, you’ll know
that having those powers means he’s just as strong
and hard as Superman, but
he’s a lot wiser, he has the ability to cast a very
powerful lightning from
the sky (Zeus’ power) and also he’s a lot faster
that Supes (in fact, he’s
as fast as Flash) Oh, and he has no weaknesses (that
I remember of, at
least) So, now you understand why he can beat the cr@p
out of Super, and in
fact, the whole JLA. I could tell you more, but…
better look it up
yourselves! I haven’t all the time in the world! :P
So, this man is a
Unique, has 11 clicks of health, no range, the JSA
TA, and costs 166 points!
Is he worth it? let’s see… although I bet you can
guess the answer :P
Stats:
Speed: 5, 11, 11, 10, 10, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 8.
Earthbound the first click
(figures…) then 4 clicks of HSS and nothing from
there on.
Attack: 6, 10, 10, 10, 9, 9, 8, 8, 8, 7, 7. Starts
with 2 of Quake (after
the activation click), and the rest is Super
Strength
Defense: 16, 15, 15, 14, 14, 13, 15, 15, 14. Starts
with 3 clicks of
Impervious( after the activation click), followed by
3 of Invulnerability,
and then is Toughness till the bitter end.
Damage: 0, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2. After the
activation click, is
Exploit Weakness until the 5th click, then follows 3
clicks of Outwit, and
the rest is empty.
Analysis: Just as Lex, this guy is unplayable. After
all I have told you,
you’re probably expecting a dominating monster… I
mean, this should be able
to take Supes’s clicks (the man has taken the whole
JLA, for crying out
loud!) But he can’t. At 166 points, and after an
activation click, that
attack should definitely be an 11 (even a 12
wouldn’t be so uncalled for),
and a 16 defense is just stupid… I mean, C’MON!… a
starting 4 as damage, and
a 11 on the movement department are sort of average…
and the powers are
cool, and are the ones that he should have, but
given that they can’t be
combined… and considering the numbers (I have always
said this: numbers are
way more important than powers: i.e. I will always
take a 18 defense with
Willpower over a 17 with Impervious) And if all that
wasn’t enough, his
stats drop way too quickly…
Conclusion: Again, do I really need to say anything
else?
Ranking:
100 – 1/5
200 – 1/5
300 – 1/5
