Created in a fan contest, this young
black teenager could change into a monstrous form
that could shift into all forms of carbon. He had
super strength and durability, could shift to
diamond, heat up and shoot fire or fly like a rocket
as a member of the then-on-the-run Thunderbolts.

Powers and analysis:
1st click: Super Strength, Invulnerability 2nd click
switched in Barrier 3rd and 4th clicks gain
Earthbound and Blades/Claws/Fangs 5th click gains
Impervious 6th click loses BCF and gains Plasticity
and Close Combat Expert.
7th and final clicks swap in Toughness.
Lack of move+attack powers means he's going to need
TK/taxi help. You also don't want to push him off
that opening Invulnerability in favor of that rather
pitiful 4 range barrier ability. And so much BCF
with such low AV -- phew. That's the bad news. The
good news is that he's a fairly cheap but powerful
brick with a LOT of damage potential well into his
middial clicks, an excellent AV in late dial and a
steady defense that never quite tanks out. There
aren't many figs who get Impervious so late in the
game, and I can attest that it can make Charcoal a
deep threat.
Feats:
He's a Thunderbolt, so he actually deserves
THUNDERBOLTS. NANOBOTS may help; though it won't get
him back to full power, the more you can harass
enemies with that middial Impervious, the better
(plus, he's almost never easy to heal). ENTANGLE is
another "maybe" card that can keep him on his
dangerous late clicks longer at a time when he's
basing a grounded fig.
Themes:
As I said, he's an actual member of Thunderbolts.
He's also currently dead, although he's proven able
to reform himself, so maybe one day...
Me, he'll be joining my Street Soldier Gangsta Black
Heroclix Clik.
Comic accurate?
Sadly no! Due to an error in production, Charcoal
lacks a flight stand and his power of flight despite
having the wing symbol -- and despite the fact that
throughout his career he flew as a matter of course!
Apart from this ridiculous error, his dial well
reflects his abilities as living coal.
In sum:
Charcoal is a mediocre piece for tourney play, but
he's a solid theme choice with some nasty late-dial
surprises.

Today's review is Charcoal
from Sinister
Well…he looks like a man made
of rock.
He is a Unique, comes in at
90 points, 4 range 1 target, 8 clicks of life, and is an
Avenger
Speed: 8,8,7,7,6,6,6,5 Earthbound clicks 3-5,
Plasticity till end
Attack: 9,8,7,7,8,9,9,10 Super Strength first two,
BCF next 3
Defense: 17,17,17,16,16,16,15,14 Invuln first, then
3 of Barrier, 2 of Imperv, 2 Toughness
Damage: 4,3,3,2,2,2,1,1 CCE last three
The Good: He can do some high damage
He eventually gets a
high attack
High def and damage
reducers can keep him around a while
Avengers team is great
thanks to T-bolts
The Bad: No move and shoot
It says he flies, but
that may be an errata, so that earthbound is wasted points
Should be Imperv, Invuln,
Tough, then barrier at and to help
If the Plasticity, high
attack, Imperv, and 4 damage was up front, he would be
better
4 range seems like
wasted points
Super Strength without
Charge or HSS is wasted points
Attack is so low he won’t
hit BCF
Feats: T-bolts is a must….I would never play him so
whatever you want….ICWO and Protected work for everyone
Overall: Ugh, I do not like this piece at all. He
is highly costed, has no move and shoot, the combinations
suck, and he is just bad. I don’t see any reason to play
him unless you are a fan of the character, but if not, stay
away…in fact, run away as fast as you can to trade him
before his value goes down.
Constructed/Unrestricted: 1.5 / 5
Sealed/Draft: 1 / 5
