Parallax
Today we don't quite go back to Collatera Damage
yet. Parallax, although it
appears as a part of this set, is a very special LE
you can get at
conventions. anyway, I'm assuming you know at least
a bit of the guy (you
should); so let's see this heavy figure (at 270,
only Ares is more
expensive. that is, for regular sized figures, of
course). 11 clicks of
health (he better have 11!), no TA (how does he
dare!), 8 range 2 targets
(again, how does he dare not have a 10?!?!). and:
Stats:
Speed: 10, 10, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 7, 7, 7, 7.
Phasing/Teleport for the 1st, 2nd,
7th, 8th, 9th click, Force Blast in between, and
that's it,
Attack: 12, 11, 10, 10, 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8, 8. Starts
with Tk for the first 2
clicks, then follows 3 of Psychic Blast, then 2 of
Tk again, then 3 of PB
again and finishes with 1 of Pulse Wave.
Defense: 17, 17, 16, 17, 16, 16, 16, 16, 15, 15, 14.
Starts with 3 of
Impervious, then follows 3 of Invulnerability, then
3 of Toughness and then
finishes with 2 of Willpower.
Damage: 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 2. Outwit is
on the 1st click and then
for the 5th, 6th and 7th click, Probability Control
is for the 2nd, 3rd,
4th, and then 8th and 8th. That's it.
Analysis: Okay, let's keep this one quick and
painful. I'll let the other
reviewers to bash him more :P Let's see. You can't
afford to cost over 200
points and lack move and attack. and neither can you
have a less than 10
range, unless you have HSS or great values with
Running Shot. you can't lack a nice TA. and if you
dare, then you better have GODLY Attack, Defense,
and
Damage. so let's see those: he has decent attack
values. for a 170 points
character, that is! only one 12 and 11, and as the
highest?? and he even
shows 8's!!! and what do I want Tk for in a 270
points character??? Psychic
Blast is nice. Defense. Captain Atom has a similar,
slightly weaker defense. and he's an average 150
ranged brick! I mean c'mon! look at Ares numbers,
look at Vet Supes from Icon numbers!. and finally
the damage. good values
and good powers.
Conclusion: It's obvious, I think. He's good for
scenarios and of course,
friendly play. But don't you dare to use him for the
real thing: 1 man teams will destroy him (KC Supes,
KC GL, Vet. Icons Supes. even Batman Ally
Supes.) well rounded teams too ( UltimatesThor
teams, Vet. Dakrseid teams.)
and little guy's teams (Vets. Asp, Havok, Jinx,
Spymaster, etc)
Ranking:
No numbers for him: bad for competitive play, great
for fun (WHAT A SCULPT!)
Today we'll be reviewing Parallax a
Convention Exclusive
(Potential Harry Potter Spoiler)
Mongul destroys all of Coast City, spitting on what
the Hal Jordan has worked to protect. Then Mongul
tell Hal who dies in the fifth Harry Potter book,
THIS BECOMES THE LAST STRAW! Hal becomes quite the
green meanie and kills all but one of the Green
Lantern Corps then destroys the OA power battery.
Hal (now Parallax) is as bad as they come until a
sun eater devours our sun, so Parallax sacrifices
himself to reignite it. As he died he told Green
Arrow he didn’t want to live in a world without
Dumbledore.
Later on we find out that Hal Jordan never did
anything wrong and that he was just controlled by
Parallax…thus nullifying that entire story line.
LE: 270 points (THE 2ND MOST EXPENSIVE
SINGLE BASED CHARACTER EVER), No Team
MOVEMENT:
Here is the reason everyone hates him. No Running
Shot or Hyper Sonic Speed makes him need support to
be able to be played. Phasing is nice, but he does
not even have it at the end so he can run away.
ATTACK:
Nice attack, it’s hard to say anything about it.
For the points it may drop a bit quickly.
Telekinesis is not something you really need on a
270 point figure. Psychic Blast for 5 is pretty
amazing, I would probably have liked to see more
Pulsewave.
DEFENSE:
17 with 3 clicks of Impervious is sadly not good
enough. It’s close, but an 18 or 19 defense to
start is what was needed. Willpower is always good
at the end, so you can run to a medic. 14 can
be healed, but may not be.
DAMAGE:
5 and Outwit is pretty amazing. Probability control
is great, but not on clicks when he is easy to hit.
No problems with his damage.
SCULPT:
Well he’s not made of metal, but I still like him
more then other convention exclusives.
Feats:
You would have to run Fortitude, so make sure his
defense was never Outwitted. Incontact and
Protected are also a must. I would even use Oracle
on the card to give him Perplex as well.
OVERALL:
Much like Venom, he looks very fun to play.
No move and shoot ability.
Ares is much better and I do not think Ares is
competitively playable.
He’s a hard hitter that will usually hit you for 5
through all your defense.
He’s loaded with great expensive abilities, but
lacks the ranges to use them to attack first.
He should be front loaded with Psychic Blast.
Parallax disappointed a lot of people, his lack of
range and move and shoot left people feeling that he
was under powered. You know what I say to that? A
lot of People are right. He’s not a bad character
for maybe 220 or 240 points, but for 270 he’s has to
be a 1 man army (like Superman), but Hal needs a TK
character around to help him get to opposing
figures. He needs a lot of feats to make sure he
does not go down quickly. He really needs a medic
with a 9 attack around him and another re-roll
character to make other figures miss. If he CAN hit
first though, he’ll probably be able to hit a
character off their move and shoot and then he’ll
whoop butt.
Play him in 500 point games or higher and you may be
pleasantly surprised.
Parallax

CORRECTION:
Venom CAN use Exploit Weakness and Blades Claws
together. It does not change my rating of him
though, because that is a mid-dial 1 click thing and
will probably not come up. If he started with
Charge, Exploit Weakness and Blades/Claws he’d be a
5 out of 5. Thank you to
Philip Grinstead for noticing that mistake.
