Today we'll be reviewing Orion from
Collateral Damage
Orion the real son of Darkseid spent his entire life
wondering one thing; why must I wear this silly
looking helmet. Despite the order of higher ups
on New Genesis, one day alone in his room Orion
removed the helmet. He was balding, just like his
real father Darkseid. Orion bought a wig, but later
went back to the helmet. Occasionally, he is still
mocked for his male pattern baldness, this is
represented by Battle Fury on his dial. Obviously
his biggest rival is the hippy haired Kalibak.
Unique: 168 points, JLA Team
MOVEMENT:
Running shot is great, then charge if he get’s
pushed. If he gets hit realistically he’ll land on
earthbound, so watch out for that. Protected is a
very good idea for him. If he uses it and has to
take a push then he’ll be on his charge clicks.
Flurry near the end could really change the tide.
ATTACK:
One of the best attacks in the set. Only two clicks
of 8 make his guy a monster and a half. Super
strength with charge is never a bad thing.
DEFENSE:
Take a deep breath, 19 from ranged. If you can get
people to roll on that once or twice it’s like
getting a couple extra free turns. Once most
characters are off their first clicks, they’ll have
no shot of hitting a 19. This will force your
opposition to get close to Orion to avoid his energy
shield. When he’s close is when he’s most
dangerous.
DAMAGE:
4’s and 3’s with close combat Expert. The 2’s are
not great, but it is on his 6th click and
of course an insane last click.
FEATS:
As I’ve said Protected for him is an absolute must.
Incontact is always important to put on your big
guns. I would not use unstoppable on him, since he
is a flyer and only has super strength for one or
two clicks.
SCULPT:
He’s got a cool helmet and Astro-harness, what ten
year old could ask for more?
OVERALL:
Very cleverly designed and easily playable.
Hard damage and decently priced.
An absolute monster in draft, first pull for sure.
Battle Fury does take out his range.
Put him on a team with one or more probability
control characters.
8 range with a single target is not as great as the
10 range on Veteran Supes from this same set.
Big figures with JLA team is so pointless.
10 clicks with as much damage reduction as he has
will make him VERY tough to kill
A single click of impervious would have been nice.
He’s good in nearly every way you could want. I
ridiculously high starting defense with great
opening damage. His range and his running Shot are
nothing to write home about, but with the new
smaller maps they’ll definitely work. I recommend
him for kids to play with, because it’s hard to make
a mistake using him since he does all the hard work
for you. Most figures will come to you, rather then
shoot on his 19 defense and when that happens you’ll
have them where you want them. I give a lot of
credit to the design team on this figure, because
it’s very well placed abilities that are both
damaging, but not outrageous. He’ll never be good
enough to compete with the Hyper Sonic Speed
Monsters, but he’s one of the better big characters
without Hyper Sonic Speed in the game.
ORION
RECEIVES 4 OUT OF A POSSIBLE 5 THUMBS
UP!
Good, Bad, I’m the Guy with the
Clix

Orion
We close this week with another Collateral Damage
Unique: Orion. For those
of you that don’t know him, he’s the actual son of
Darkseid, traded to High
Father from New Genesis, in order to keep the
balance and… I don’t quite
remember how that part went at the moment :P Anyway,
being Darkseid’s son,
and actually being destined to destroy him, you’d
think he’s a very powerful clix (at least he should
be able to take on Vet. Darkseid :P) So, let see:
Costs 168 points, he’s a flyer, a JLA member, has an
8 range 1 target, and
he’s Kalibak’s archenemy… that’s something I’ve been
forgetting, so I’ll say here that Dr. Light and
Elongated Man are archenemies… and I think there’s
one more… I can’t remember, I’ll chack later; anyway
he has a nice sculpt
and 10 clicks of life, and:
Stats:
Speed: 10, 8, 8, 8, 7, 6, 5, 5, 5, 5. Starts with a
single click of Running
Shot, then moves to 2 of Charge, then gains 2 of
Earthbound, then 1 of
Charge, and then moves to 3 of Flurry. Final click
is empty.
Attack: 10, 11, 10, 9, 8, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. Super
Strength from the 2nd till the 5th click.
Defense: 17, 17, 17, 16, 15, 14, 14, 14, 14, 15.
Starts with Energy
Shield/Deflection, then has 1 click of
Invulnerability and then is Toughness till his 7th
click, and then the las 3 are Invulnerability.
Damage: 4, 4, 3, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 4. Has CCE on the
4th and 5th clicks,
then is Battle Fury till the 9th click, and on his
final click he has
Exploit Weakness.
Analysis: I don’t like this guy much either, the
only great thing about him is his attack, always
high and with some SS when he has Charge. The
movement is not too bad, but basically is that 1st
click of RS and then 2 of Charge.
Earthbound sucks, and the next click of Charge, for
3, is very poor. 3
clicks of Flurry would be cool, but with only the
last of those having a
damage higher than 2 (and it’s a 3) it’s nothing
that great either :S. His
defense bothers me: for who he is and his cost, he
should have Impervious
and the Invulnerability at the beginning (and if
it’s gonna be at the end,
give him some decent values there) That’s the other
problem, he only has
good defense values for the first 4 clicks, but
given he starts with a non
damage reducing power, when he takes a hit he’ll
probably get pass those
good values :S
Finally the damage… a lot Battle Fury scr**ing his
range, and to make it
worse the values there are just 2… the first 5
clicks are ok (for close
combat mainly, given the Super Strength and the CCE).
Oh yeah, he has a nice final click: 12 attack, 4
damage with EE… would be better if he had a little
higher defense, but well…
Conclusion: The way to play him is to push him off
his first click, it’s a
good idea to do so while you go towards your foes
while Running Shooting…
Because he becomes a CC figure after that first
click, and because if they
Outwit you Energy S/D or manage to hit you, you’ll
regret losing some of his best clicks. He is
healable during most of the second half of his dial…
Ranking:
No numbers for him either, I’d have to play him to
say something and be sure of what I’m saying, for
now it seems he can be good if played with careful
planning… but also, it seems a team of ranged
hitters could take him easily… try him out
yourselves
