Today we check out Thor! For those of you who
don’t know him, this guy is like Superman, for Marvel. This
time we get him as an R/E/V of his classical version. If you
don’t the remember, the best one till this day was that
Unique that represented his Utlimates version. So is he
good? Well, I’ll be reviewing the Veteran, which is the best
out of the R/E/V (the rookie has a very poor range and speed
for his 112 points, as well as a weak defense and lackluster
damage; the experienced has no TA, and while is not too bad,
there are much better clicks for the 163 points he costs).
For 235 points you get a flyer, Avengers TA, 8 range 2
targets, no archenemy, 10 clicks of health (why not
eleven?!?!?!) and:
Stats:
Speed: 10, 10, 10, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 8, 7. 1st clicks has
Running Shot, then come 2 with Charge, then he regains
Running shot for 3 clicks and then is nothing till the last
click, which has Phasing/Teleport.
Attack: 12, 11, 10, 12, 11, 10, 10, 9, 9, 9. Super Strength
from the 1st till the 4th, 5th and 6th clicks have Energy
Explosion, 7th, 8th and 9th clicks have Quake, and the last
one has Pulse Wave.
Defense: 16, 15, 17, 16, 15, 17, 16, 16, 16, 17. First 2
clicks have Impervious, then follow 3 with Invulnerability,
then 2 with Willpower and the last 3 have Toughness.
Damage: 5, 5, 4, 3, 4, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4. 3rd and 4th clicks
have CCE, 7th and 8th RCE and that’s it.
Analysis:
His Speed is not half bad; that RS with an 8 range is ok for
the points.
Charge on his 2nd and 3rd clicks can be nice is you want to
go into close combat, and you might want to, due to his CCE
and Super Strength. Getting RS back for a while is pretty
good. I have to say, though, that if he gets hit first
you’ll be on his Charge clicks, so watch out for that. Last
click with Phasing would be nice to run to the medic, IF HE
WAS HEALABLE.
His Attack is pretty good, but again he’s 235 points, isn’t
he? The powers… Super Strength is nice with Charge, Energy
Explosion can be of some use with
2 targets, but I think that it won’t be used a lot really.
Quake… the same.
Pulse Wave have its uses.
His Defense is the only part I don’t like that much. It’s
not that it’s too bad, either. I’d like him to have 1 extra
click of Impervious, and also a higher defense on those
impervious clicks… Those damage reducers will help him stay
in the fray for long. Willpower is nice, since it will allow
you to deliver a lot of hurt, and his defense is high there
(it’s mid-dial, at that point your opponent guys attack’s
shouldn’t be high enough to hit him easily). He pretty much
can’t be healed, but neither can he be hit that easy,
besides he remains dangerous through all his dial.
His Damage, like his attack, is good too. Not much to say,
he hits hard enough for his points, always around 4.
Conclusion: Not much to add, he’s solid. With Avengers TA,
make him 240 and any team you want. Throw in ICWO and
Protected also, and make him a 258 monster. This way he can
be quite good in 400 points matches, and a monster in 500
points matches. In 300, you can either just slap
Thunderbolts on the guy and support him with a couple of
weenies, or you can just load him with Feats and then go to
town. Not sure how well he could do there.
Speed: Love it, Running shot, Charge, then more
Running Shot…Phasing at and to run away is awesome
Attack: Love it, Charge and SS work good, RS and EE
work too, Quake I never use…Pulse Wave…why not?
Defense: Little low for the values but plenty of
damage reducers…the willpower midway can be both good and
bad…you might want to save your protected for those clicks
Damage: Love it, stays good and is dangerous all the
way down the dial
The Good: Great attack values
2 targets is always
great
Great movement and
damage
Avengers Team
The Bad: Not 11 clicks?
Feats: Thunderbolts, Alpha Flight, ICWO, Protected,
Shellhead all work
Overall: Wow…what a monster. I like him…a
lot….more than Thanos. If you pull him, use him and enjoy.
Finally, Marvel is starting to have good high-priced pieces.
