Closing this Supernova week we have Thanos’
archenemy Silver Surfer! Unlike his archenemy, SS has
flight, and like him, he has 10 range 1 target, the Power
Cosmic TA, and 10 clicks of health. He even costs almost the
same, clocking in at 265 points (i'm doing the Vet.). So, is
he worth it? Is he like his archenemy? let’s see!:
Stats:
Speed: 12, 12, 10, 10, 9, 10, 11, 12, 9, 8. Running Shot
from the 1st till the 4th click, and HSS from the 6th till
the 8th click.
Attack: 10, 11, 11, 11, 10, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8. Energy Explosion
the 1st click, Psychic Blast on his 4th and 5th clicks, and
that’s it.
Defense: 18, 17, 16, 16, 15, 16, 16, 16, 16, 15. 1st and 2nd
clicks are Invulnerability, then he has 3 clicks of
Impervious, then another 2 of Invulnerability, then 2 of
Toughness and 1 last of Regeneration.
Damage: 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2. RCE on his 2nd and 3rd
clicks, and that all.
Analysis:
Wow, unlike the other 2 guys in this week, his Speed is
actually pretty nice! Running Shot for 4 clicks then later
on some HSS, with a nice range.
Great.
His Attack low…. too bad, we had started so great… Energy
Explosion is useless here… Psychic Blast is nice, but he has
too little, and besides he has it on clicks with low damage.
For 265 points I definitely want a higher attack.
His Defense disappointing. Low values for the cost; he’s
easy to hit but hard to heal… besides he’s got 3 clicks of
Impervious (I want more!) and he doesn’t even start with
that, he starts with Invulnerability! A major drawback
there.
His Damage is what finishes him off… with such good Speed
and a decent range, and the Power Cosmic TA, less than good
Attack and Defense for the points could have been dealt
with, if he had great Damage. But that’s not our case here:
his values are waaay to low, and all he has to help that is
2 clicks of RCE, which (to make things worse) are on Running
Shot clicks…
Conclusion: First, I wanna comment that both this and
Thano’s sculpt are pretty cool. But their dials are
something different. I wonder if we’ll ever get a GOOD high
point character, a real one man army. KC Supes was close,
but fell just short of what was needed. KC GL is a good
approximation, but the fact that if he takes 1 hit he’s
pretty much done makes me unable to call him a REAL one man
army. Ok, back to SS: thanks to his great Speed, he can be
played; you can use ICWO to make his attack higher, and some
other Enhancer/Perplexer for his damage, and finally carry
around a medic, or at least have it ready. You can also put
some Feat on this guy and make him stronger. But the thing
is, he NEEDS those things to be GOOD. So that means he can’t
be expected to do well on a 300 points match, and usually
tourneys are for 300 points forces. So, basically I’d keep
him out of serious 300 points games… even 400. However, just
like with Thanos, knock yourself out in 500 points. There he
can be a real pain. Still, don’t be too confident, as you’ll
find Thanos and other big guys there, like Icons V Supes, so
don’t think you have won the game by putting SS on the field
;)
Rating: 3.25/5. Just slightly better than Thanos, which is
not enough
First off, the Experienced is
by far the worst of the three. The vet is a great piece,
but if your paying the 265 points, you should get either the
psychic blast +running shot or bare HSS to start. Also, he
needs to have higher damage. Only two clicks of 4 damage
for 265 points is pretty disappointing. He should also be
11 clicks. I think in a 300 point game, putting Shellhead
and ICWO on him then putting ICWO on a 5 point pog could be
a good team. Personally, I see myself using the rookie the
most. You can do a lot more with the 144 points you save.
The best of the three is the
rookie
Speed: 4 clicks of running shot is great in my book
Attack: Wow, look at those numbers, almost unheard
of these days
Defense: Decent numbers with some damage reduction
to keep him around, Regeneration can keep him around a
little longer
Damage: He just couldn’t start with the 4’s could
he?
The Good: All that running shot with an 8 range is
great
Great attack numbers
Damage reducers keep
him around
Very pushable
Long dial
The Bad: Damage is all over the place and should
start higher
Feats: ICWO for damage, Protected, Shellhead works
if you plan on pushing, Auto Regen if you want for that last
click…if you land on it
Overall: Well, a lot of people have been looking
forward to a new Silver Surfer for a while and we finally
have a really playable version of him. Basically, he is a
great piece in all three versions. The rookie’s attack
reminds me a lot of what I love about War Machine. You can
easily build a competitive team around him and even in a 200
point format you could make it work.
Constructed/Unrestricted: 4 / 5
Sealed/Draft: 4 / 5 (well, we haven’t seen the rest yet)
