Today's review is Mandarin
from Avengers
Dr. Strange’s old nemesis and
one of 3 pieces so far that showcase the new special powers
boxes…Mandarin. He is the Avengers buy it by the brick
piece. Is he worth the 90 dollar investment? Lets see
He is an LE, 156 points, 12
range 1 target, 8 clicks of life, a flier, no AE, and no
team
Movement – clicks 2,3,4,7,8
are Special
Attack – clicks 2,3,7,8 are
special
Speed: Mind control sucks with one target, Left hand
of mandarin is cool though, giving you Energy Explosion,
Incap, or MC
Attack: Decent values that get a little too low.
Psy blast is awesome, especially with a huge range. Right
hand of the Mandarin is cool too, giving him Barrier, Force
Blast, Quake, Smoke Cloud, and TK
Defense: Average numbers, I wish it was more
willpower though. Barrier is ridiculous on a piece that
will take up half your points and be your main attacker
Damage: Bad for the points, but Outwit helps, and
RCE comes in when you will either be nanobotting or running
away. You wont be hitting anything with a 7 attack
The Good: 12 range
Tons of useable powers
Psy blast and Outwit
The Bad: Incap, Mind Control, EE, Barrier suck with
one target
Not many of the
combinations really work
Barrier for 156 points
Low damage
Attack gets low
Feats: Protected is a must…I really don’t know of
too much that works with this guy. ICWO helps…and I guess
Mercenary if you want to give him some team ability
Overall: At first glance I thought this guy was
ridiculous. At second glance…not so much. For 156 points,
he is not main attacker material. He is a secondary
attacker/ support piece in 600 point games, which is pretty
much the only time I would ever really use him. I never buy
bricks though, (I’m not made of money), so I probably won’t
have this guy. He seems like a fun piece to play though,
and in the right teams he could probably work. With all the
powers, he seems like he could have potential, but really
isn’t that great. So far, Phantom Girl is the best piece
with the new White Boxes.
Constructed/Unrestricted: 2.5 / 5
Sealed/Draft: N/A / 5
Overall: 2.5 / 5
“Heroclix….they’re cool,
addictive, and available….the things practically sell
themselves.”

To note: the
underlined numbers are for Mandy's special powers.
To prevent readers from speeding over to the site I'll
just put the stats here.
Speed
Underlined: Energy
Explosion, Incapacitate and Mind Control
Attack
Underlined: Barrier,
Force Blast, Quake, Smoke Cloud, and Telekinesis
Speed
-- No movement.. *sigh* at least he has a gazillion
other powers to use. Mind Control never seems to come in
handy for heavy hitters.
Attack
-- Sweet 11 with Psychic Blast and 12 Range! Values
really die down quicker than they should but with all
those powers it will make up for it.. I think.
Defense
-- If only Willpower could start. A triple dose of 17's
works for me. Did anyone else notice Mandarin has
Barrier on every single click but one?
Damage
-- The best part of the dial. He is front loaded with
Outwit and it will take FIVE clicks to get rid of it.
Near-death RCE could really rack up some last chance
clicks.
Sculpt
-- Where's Mandarin's oranges? (Only kidding)
Romanco's Breakdown
~ All these powers
are making my reviews based less on numbers
~ Barrier = no damage
reduction
~ 12 Range
~ Hard to move around
Mandarin is a good
example of how the new clix system won't work well. He
costs over 150 points and is obviously not worth it. One
big hit and you're stuck with 8 attack and 15 defense.
But why 150 points? THE POWERS. The options seem almost
endless but are they worth it? Not in my eyes. Hopefully
the rest of this set won't be carried away like him.
I give Mandarin a
2/5.
