Rurouni KJS Rookie Ultra Boy
wing speed
130 points
Team: Legion of Super-Heroes
Keywords: Future, Legion of Super-Heroes, Teen
Range: 6 x 1

DIAL:

ANALYSIS:
Tipping the Legion of Super-Heroes Starter Set's scales at 130 points, Ultra Boy is the heaviest hitter with Charge, Super Strength, 4 Damage and, best of all, Impervious with 18 Defense Value. He's a great bruiser. (Let's leave off the fact that this power combo doesn't reflect the fact that he can only use one power at a time -- if he's using Super Strength to tote an object, there's no way he can still be Impervious or do a ranged attack. NOT CHARACTER
ACCURATE.) His 2nd click bumps his Attack Value to 11 with Flurry and Battle Fury, so at that point he's all about close combat...but just for one click, as he gets his first-click powerset right back on #3 though with slightly lower numbers.

Then U-Boy completely switches powers from Ultra-Strong/Tough/Blast to Ultra-Fast. Hypersonic, Super Senses and Battle Fury make for a hit&run style compared with his early dial. Late-dial, he's flexible with the option to cut through defense reducers with Penetra-Vision (Psychic Blast) or beat down weak targets with Flurry. He's down to Toughness at this point.

FEATS?
Though it's great for most figures, PROTECTED is almost required for Ultra Boy. Either use it after he's made his alpha strike to put him on his powerful 2nd click, or save it for his very soft HSS mid-dial clicks. You'll be glad you did, either way. EXTENDED RANGE can help him snipe a while before taking his Charge. All that Battle Fury could make REVENGE useable for once. Among retired cards, DAMAGE SHIELD works on every click.

IN SUM:
He's awfully good, but again, his dial is somewhat inaccurate given the character's one-power-at-a-time limitation. The only REAL conflict is when he's using Super Strength to hold an object and he takes incoming fire...his Impervious should either turn off or he should have to drop the object. But Heroclix doesn't work that way, so if you want to play Ultra Boy RIGHT, don't pick up your object until he's actually making his attack.

Oh, but you want to know how he actually PLAYS. He's good. Ultra-good? Not quite; his stats take the usual late-dial slide and his powers on that back end aren't so hot. He never craps out and his early clicks are indeed Ultra.

RATING: 4 of 5.

Today's review is Ultra Boy from Legion of Super Heroes

Well, it only took us about 2 months, but we finally almost wrap up our LoSH reviews.  I am also going to say this is the last figure for what seems to be High Attacks Week.

Like I said, no idea about the LoSH people, so whoclix this one.

He is a rookie, 130 points, 6 range 1 target, 8 clicks of life, a flier, and LoSH team

Speed:  He starts with charge and not HSS….sigh.  Still, all that movement and flurry is nice

Attack:   Well, at least this time we get charge with SS, but no SS and HSS?  Psy Blast and Flurry is an odd combo, but I guess it keeps him dangerous in more than one way.

Defense:  Nice, 18 and Imperv made Vet Supes what he was (besides being God-like).  Super Senses I never hit when I roll, and toughness can keep support from finishing him off.

Damage:  Not as great as I want it to be, but still isn’t bad.  At least he can nanobot back to HSS

The Good:  High Defense with Imperv

      Lots of movement powers

      Good attack values

      Wildcard

He is a teen keyword, meaning he fits in with about 80% of recent pieces

The Bad:   No upfront HSS

                 6 range is limiting

I would rather see Invulnerability than Super Senses

                 Battle Fury

Feats:  Nanoarmor, nanobots, protected all work good

Overall:  Alright, here is an interesting piece.  The problem with guys like this who have HSS in the middle of the dial is that if someone knows his dial, they are going to make sure you do not land on those clicks.  Thanks to charge, he is going to be close up to your opponents pieces, meaning he will get attacked a lot.  Luckily, an 18 with Impervious is very impressive, and could keep him alive longer than you would think.  Also, some of the power combinations are weird.  Super Strength and Psychic Blast with flurry seems very odd to me, but I guess it could come in handy, if you get based by a guy with invuln while you have psy blast, you can hit him down to toughness.  The next, you can flurry for decent damage.  Oh yeah, a half dial of Battle Fury sucks, but he can nanobot back to HSS, so take full advantage of that. I feel he is a decent piece, but not one that I feel safe enough to field in a 300 point team.  He is by no means bad, but just does not feel worth the 130 point investment.

Constructed/Unrestricted:  3 / 5

Sealed/Draft:   N/A  / 5

Overall:    3 / 5
