ANALYSIS:
Like Firelords past, this new version is designed for the first strike. And with just one click of Running Shot, that's likely all you'll get. Well, that's not entirely true. He keeps Range Combat Expert and Energy Explosion for a few clicks more, giving him the ability to shoot hard for a long time until he actually takes damage, thanks to the Power Cosmic TA allowing him to push without giving up clicks.

When he does lose a few clicks, he converts into a close fighter with Poison and Flurry. His Attack Value shoots up to a peak of 12, too. His defense suffers a little, slipping from top-dial's Invulnerable 17 to a steady 16 + Toughness. Late-dial, he's down to Energy Shield/Deflection and sinking AV and DV numbers, so at this point you'll want to Phase him away to either run to the medic or to line up for a single-target Pulse Wave for 4-5 damage.

FEATS?
Firelord can get a lot early on out of TRICK SHOT, especially carting along a meat shield to shoot past.
But the most cost-efficient (and still-legal) card for him is ARMOR PIERCING to get the most bang out of his EE and Poison clicks.

IN SUM:
Take this set's Silver Surfer, strip him of his hit & run ability and you've basically got the new Firelord.
Far from the wineglass-jawed Infinity Challenge version, though.

Today's review is Firelord from Avengers

 

The old Firelord dominated the game in the early years, and after 5 years we finally get a new version.  Will he continue the legacy?

 

He is a Unique, 176 points, 8 range 1 target, 9 clicks of life, a flier, no AE, and Power Cosmic

Speed:  A single click of RS is more than we got out of the old firelord, flurry is a cool combo with Poison, and Phasin to run is always cool

Attack:   High, EE sucks single targeted, Poison is interesting, and Pulse Wave with HUGE damage is awesome…why couldn’t that be upfront…well he would be too broken and that is not the Seth way

Defense:  Standard numbers, with damage reduction and ESD


Damage:  RCE and RS do not work, but the RCE keeps the damage really high upfront.  Flurry with 3 damage is always nice, and high with pulse wave can be game breaking if everything works out the right way

 
The Good:  Extremely cheap Power Cosmic piece

                   Huge attack for the points

                   High damage

                   Phasing to run

                   Pulse wave – high damage

                   Is never really bad

     

The Bad:  1 target EE

                RS and RCE

                Tough to heal


Feats:  He is cheap enough here to really shine, so there is no reason to not use Shellhead and Protected.  Armor Piercing is a tough call, because with one target you don’t get too much use with EE, but you get a ton with Poison.  Nanobots you also get a little use with, but I wouldn’t really use it.

 

Overall: Wow, here is a piece that I really like. You get great stats, huge attack, and great potential to build a team around him for only 176 points.  He is a a good beat stick, who can be dangerous from range and close.  Also, in unrestricted Bizarro games, slap some Nova Blast on him and you can rip most teams. Use him.

Sealed/Draft:    4 / 5 (IF he can be used in CoG…I really need to research these events better)

Excuse my absence from the Terrax review. At least he wasn't that good anyway =). Maybe Firelord will be better? Let's find out.

 Speed  -- At least it's a step up from the Infinity Challange one. Mid-dial Flurry? Talk about sudden change in strategy. Phasing as always to flee from the battlefield.

 Attack  -- I'm not a fan of attack bumping above the full health click later in the dial. Wasted clicks, basically. Nontheless, the numbers are incredible. Energy Explosion will still never be used, but Poison may come in handy while deploying close combat.

 Defense  -- Just three Invulnerability clicks for 176 points? Values aren't too superb either.

 Damage  -- Pointless.. Running Shot and RCE don't work together. Too many lows for a high cost in my eyes.

 Sculpt  -- Does he wear clothes?

 Feat Candidates
~ Nova Blast (if only it wasn't retired)
~ Armor Piercing to ensure a hit
~ Damage Shield would be perfect. He can manipulate it every click but *sigh* retired.
~ Nanobots. Lots of 2's in there.
~ Protected

~ Firelord is okay in unrestricted games. I don't see him winning too many tourneys that's for sure. He's meant to deliver from range but works much better at close. Remember the rule that at close combat, hovering characters are permitted to use range. So by the time Firelord gets hurt here comes Flurry and Poison. From my perspective, he is efficient enough to use. But save it for the crazy games.
