Today's review is Sandman from Origin

Wesley Dodds….the original Sandman (besides Morpheus)…and a former original JSA member…he also gave Norman McKay the visions in Kingdom Come

He is a Unique, 59 points, 6 range 1 target, 7 clicks of life, and a JSA member

Speed:  Stealth, L/C, Mind Control, then more Stealth…that is a pretty unique dial

Attack:  Lots of Smoke Cloud and Incap with decent values for the points

Defense:  Not bad, stealth and Wilpower never hurts, the late Combat Reflexes works cool with stealth

Damage:  The Prob Control helps, and the CCE can keep him hurtin late dial

The Good:  Stealth and Smoke Cloud / Combat Reflexes

A cheap Prob Controller for JSA

You don’t normally see a dial like this

The Bad:   6 range 1 target sucks for mind control and Incapacitate

     Damage values are not great

Damage values get a little low

Feats:   I wouldn’t bother, but Nanobots, ICWO, Protected, and Armor Piercing all help

Overall:    This guy is not really a great piece, but he is different.  I think that is why I like him.  He brings something new to JSA teams.  He is actually a great value for what you get for a JSA team.  You almost get everything you get with the old E Doc Fate for 70 points less.  In a standard format, he is really nothing special.  On the hole, I want to give him a not great review….but I can see this guy being annoying, and sometimes that is better than being a one-click wonder

Unique Sandman

59 points

Team: JSA

Range: 6 x 1

Dial:

Starting with Stealth, Smoke Cloud, Willpower and Probability Control, Sandman is a great support piece to start. For one click. His second click is a tad more combat-ready with Leap/Climb, Incapacitate and 10 AV. Click #3 brings up a surprise slot of Mind Control and the return of PC.

The 2nd half of his dial is full of Stealth and Smoke Cloud, enabling him to run off to the medic in comparative safety. But his low Speed could hamper that, so try instead using him to tie up enemies; Combat Reflexes make him tough to hit in close (and the Stealth/Smoke combo forces foes to do hand-to-hand). A pair of late Close Combat Expert clicks don't hurt either.

FEATS?

All that Smoke Cloud makes FLASHBANG pretty tempting.

Same for RUNNING START, to help his low mobility. But I think I really like AMBUSH -- it could be quite the rude surprise on those Stealth-laden low-AV clicks.

Finally, PROTECTED is better on him than most to keep him on that first Willpower slot.

THEMES/COMIC ACCURACY:

A great representation of the Golden Age Sandman, even remembering his sleeping gas's truth-serum qualities (hence the MC). Theme him up with Origin U/LEs Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Starman, Dr. Fate, and R Phantom Lady for a proper WWII-era JSA.

IN SUM:

A great addition to the JSA, giving them Stealthed PC and cheap 17 defense to share. A good piece in its own right as well, able to damage any figure on most clicks for under 60 points.

RATING:

4 out of 5.
