I had to skip last week's reviews for
fear of going into a totally grouchy rant about such
premature or needless reviews when there are plenty
of figures in Origin left to analyze.
Oops, I guess I just did.
Anyhow, here's one of Origin's key remakes,
STEEL.
Let's see if the dials are as good as that
sweet-looking sculpt.
Rookie Steel
wing speed
116 points
Team: Superman Ally
Range: 6 x 1
DIAL:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10949&unitid=12637&universeid=6
Rookie Steel is a pretty standard flying brick.
His stats are just OK for the points: his range is a
mediocre 6, his move+attack is limited to Charge,
his Attack Value starts at 9 and slips to 8 for the
last three of his seven clicks. And yeah, seven
clicks seems a bit short for a 100+ pointer, but he
does sport damage reducers throughout. The good news
is that his Defense Value spikes to a high of 17
when he loses Invulnerability, Quake and Close
Combat Expert to gain Toughness, Super Strength and
Outwit. The last power could work well with his
anti-Stealth team ability; in fact his mid-dial
isn't bad at all. It might be worth pushing him
early on to get there.
FEATS?
None really cry out to be used on him aside from
most of the "one size fits all" variety like IN
CONTACT WITH ORACLE, PROTECTED, or ARMOR PIERCING.
THEMES/COMIC ACCURACY:
Fitting of the down-on-his-luck genius
engineer-cum-construction worker who, inspired by
Superman's example, built a powered armor in his
brownstone basement. Tony Stark, eat your heart out.
IN SUM:
Rookie Steel doesn't really excel at anything.
He's not bad, but not real good.
RATING: 3 of 5. Field him with at least one
wildcard to use his TA.
=========================================
Experienced Steel
wing speed
138 points
Team: JLA
Range: 8 x 1
DIAL:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10950&unitid=12637&universeid=6
Exp. Steel's 22 extra points buy a better average
AV across the board and an extra click of life. The
tradeoff is the loss of the anti-Stealth Superman
Ally TA for the less-useful JLA free move. Starting
with Quake instead of Super Strength is also a heck
of a downgrade. For these reasons, E Steel might be
best used at range to Perplex teammates until he
reaches his range-heavy 2nd and 3rd clicks. An
improved range of 8 would do his Range Combat Expert
well, and Force Blast + Super Strength can give him
options up close.
Later in his dial he switches to a more close
combat focus with Charge+Quake before ending with
more Perplex. A full load of Invulnerability and
Toughness give him some survivability, too,
especially with his DV spike.
FEATS?
ARMOR PIERCING can give him the most for his
Quake clicks. REPULSOR might be good for his two
Force Blast clicks, as would TRICK SHOT on the same
two slots. A fair amount of 2 damage clicks make
NANOBOTS a pretty good fit.
THEMES/COMIC ACCURACY:
This is JLA Steel, with his fancy new hammer that
hits harder the further he throws it. He really
ought to have Running Shot.
IN SUM:
Very solid figure. Use his Perplex for all its
worth!
RATING: 3.5 of 5.
=========================================
Veteran Steel
wing speed
164 points
Team: none
Range: 10 x 1
DIAL:
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/dc/figures_dials.asp?dialid=10951&unitid=12637&universeid=6
The range boost to 10 is GREAT. Give him a 19 DV
in hindering terrain and use him to snipe at enemies
until he can Charge for big damage with Super
Strength. Then, don't be afraid to push for a KO,
because his AV spikes from a starting 10 to 11 and
never sinks below 9. His damage is also excellent
throughout, and his defense spikes to 17 TWICE down
the length of his nine clicks, even if his reducers
quit after only seven. Ending with Outwit and 4
damage can be a rude shock for opponents.
FEATS?
He doesn't need one, except maybe NANOARMOR to
protect against Hypersonic Meteorites and such.
THEMES/COMIC ACCURACY:
Not sure how accurate this Steel is. Is this his
Steelworks suit, or his Our Worlds At War "Aegis"
armor? Who knows. Theme him up with his niece
Natasha (the Legacy giant Steel) or Superman. And
there is no one better for bizarro (dials played
backwards) games.
IN SUM:
Great stats and virtually no wasted points makes
for an affordable tentpole for 300-point games.
RATING: 4.5 out of 5. You're going to see him in
Wizard Worlds after this summer's retirements, I
think. |

Today's review is Steel
from Origin
Sorry about the confusion
last week. We were going to review Steel on Friday, but a
fan request came in, so we pushed him back a bit. That’s
right the fans come first here on Pojo. Now we review
probably one of my favorite pieces from Origin, Steel.
The old rookie steel was the
go to piece to have anti-stealth on your team. None of them
were really offensive pieces, and even he was chincy for the
61 point investment. Now we have a new representation, all
with a much better sculpt, and MUCH better stats. He is
also the ultimate go to piece for a Bizzaro World scenario
(dials start on last click and go backwards). Don’t believe
me? Use him and enjoy, I know I did.
The best of the three is the
Veteran
He is 164 points, 10 range 1
target, 9 clicks of life, no AE, a flier, and no team
Speed:
4 of charge, I would have liked to see maybe one of running
shot
Attack: Wow, tops at an 11 and never gets below 9,
for 164 points that is awesome. He will always be dangerous
Defense: I love me 18 defenses on a flier, meaning
in hindering that is a 19. It stays high the entire time.
He is impossible to heal at the end, but at that point in
the game no one is going to be hitting a 17 defense
Damage: Always stays good, with abilities to make it
even better, wait, do I see the ability to do 6 damage?
Hello!! Ending outwit with those stats is amazing, too bad
it isn’t frontloaded too
The Good: Always dangerous
10 range
High defense and damage
reducers
High damage potential
Power combinations work
The Bad: Charge is alright, but running shot would
have been much better
Feats: Protected helps, Shellhead works great
because he is so pushable, Mercenary can give you a team
ability if you so wish
Overall: WOW, I LOVE THIS CLIX. He is a monster,
with the stats that keep him really dangerous throughout the
entire dial. He is no Ultimate Thor, but he is close, damn
close. In fact, he could be the new Thor, if only he had
the anti stealth team ability. I used him in my last
bizzaro match, and he never took damage. The most he was
hit down was onto his first toughness click from the end
because of a push and another push from protected. He
really is that monstrous. From the front, he is a monster.
The attack is high, the damage is high, the defense is high,
I really like him. The fact that he is mainly close combat
can be a problem to some, but you have the points for any TK
piece you choose, so it really is not that big of a
problem. He can take a hit and keep on swinging, and he can
do it for his whole dial while dealing tons of damage.
Constructed/Unrestricted: 4.5 / 5
Sealed/Draft: 4 / 5 (Mon-L, Shazam, and Supergirl’s HSS
will get him)
Overall: 4.5 / 5
“Heroclix….they’re cool,
addictive, and available….the things practically sell
themselves.”
