Francesco Rook's Heroclix afternoon chat
An evening of Whine and Cheese

A couple of weeks ago I got together with one of my friends and we sat down to play an afternoon of Marvel Heroclix. We normally play with themed teams and try to go ‘good guy’ versus ‘bad guy’ as much as we can.

As you can plainly see, we are not the most competitive bunch. We like to win but we’d rather win off a theme than with a bunch of characters with no link between them. But that’s the way we like to play and the way we’ve played since day one. To give you a clear idea of what I'm saying I'll give you one simple exemple : A friend from our group plays in tournaments on every saturday and sunday at local venues and has still to play a mismatched team. Never. Winning to him is not as important as just playing a cool team.

Getting back to our story, on that day, respectfully, I asked my friend to field a team of mismatched characters with no real association. It hadn’t really been done and no one realy had cared for it until I did it. I said I had an idea and wanted to field something that looked cool in my head. He said he didn’t really mind but he’d stick to the concept team and decided to field an evil mutant based theme.

We were using the Daily Planet outside map from the DC map set. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this map, it looks like the Frogger video game but with more cars. It’s almost impossible to find 10 squares that do not at one point cross hindering terrain. This will come into play later.

The teams were of 300 pts a piece.
Joel used the following team.
- Magneto Unique from Ultimates
- Vertigo Veteran
- Paramedic Veteran
- Sabertooth Experienced from Infinity
- And I forget who else

I used the following team
- Nebula Veteran ( N )
- U-Man Experienced ( U )
- Moloid Rookie ( M )
- Moloid Experienced ( Z )
- Alfred Pog ( A )
- Mandroid Rookie ( D )
- Ulik Rookie ( K )
- Paramedic Experienced ( P )
- Nathan Richards Pog ( R )
- Trick Shot Ability card (with Nebula)

I used to following formula to advance upon my enemy.
XXX U A M XX
XXX R N Z XX
XXXX P X XX
XX XX X X X X
XXXXXX K D

The wall of disposable characters at the front is used to be put in hindering terrain and block your opponent from being able to shoot directly at them. Both Alfred and Moloid have Stealth and block line of sight. They also both serve as Mastermind fodder if you absolutely have to. Since this map was full of hindering terrain, it would’ve been harder to find a straight line than to find a place to hide.

Here is the breakdown of the team and what they are supposed to be used for.

The U-Man is there to lend help in the form of Enhancement should the need arise and Mastermind fodder later on if all else fails.

The paramedic is there to heal Medusa should she need to push or Ulik and Mandroid in the same situation.

The Mandroid is used to TK Ulik into battle should the opponent try to swarm the pack. Ulik can charge so all the Mandroid has to do is TK Ulik next to the pack and Ulik can move a couple of spaces and attack the enemy. While the enemy is busy with Ulik, Medusa can blast away at her hearth’s content.

Let’s just say that Joel’s team was not ready for something like this. To be honest, this is the first time one of us actually played a cheese team
and it just mowed through and never looked back. Everytime he flung
someone my way or tried to come in with Magneto, I would shoot the hell out of them with Nebula and her now 5 Clicks of ranged damage.

I had fun just looking at him and seeing the look on his face when he realised there was nothing and I mean nothing he could do to stop me with the team he had. All in all we had some fun, ate pretzels and drank Coke.
I’d say a very good afternoon.

Epilogue :
Since I’ve played this team against Joel, I’ve found a way to be even cheesier with this kind of combo. You can now Perplex Nebula and make her
damage 5 clicks and her range 13 squares… Isn’t that just wrong? And
before anyone sends me an e-mail, I didn’t check and I don’t know how mush this team is worth…

- Nebula Veteran ( N )
- Moloid Rookie ( M ) X 5
- Mandroid Rookie ( D )
- Ulik Rookie ( K )
- Paramedic Experienced ( P )
- Rookie Con Artist ( C ) X 4
- Trick Shot Ability card (with Nebula)

If you have any suggestions of a cheesy team and how to use it, make sure to e-mail me at Francescorook@hotmail.com

I’m looking for cheesy teams using multiple characters and straight forward battle plans. I don’t want an inbox full of Ultimate Thor, Medics and Perplexer teams. I’ll print the funniest, most original and coolest ones here.
