If a card(s) is banished by your opponent’s card effect, while this card is in your GY (except during the Damage Step): You can Special Summon this card. Icejade Gymir Aegirine brings us back to the Icejade archetype and a new Synchro within it.

WATER Attribute-specific, needing a WATER Tuner and then anything to make the total of 10 Levels to summon Gymir Aegirine. Respectable ATK for that high of a level, Gymir Aegirine offers your monsters complete protection for the turn from being banished or destroyed by your opponent’s card effects. Board-protection for face-up monsters you control each turn free of charge is an amazing effect that forces your opponent to win through battle or by non-destruction/banishing effects…pretty specific there. That effect would already be enough reason to play this card in WATER-based Decks, however there’s more to it than that. This protection also gains advantage. You’ll activate this in response to an opponent’s effect trying to banish or destroy one of your monsters, Gymir Aegirine will then banish that card. Because you can’t give your face-up monsters protection over and over the same turn this spot removal after the protection is a once per turn even if you had multiple copies.

If Gymir Aegirine is in the grave and your opponent were to banish a card(s) then you get a free Special Summon of Gymir Aegirine from your grave, and giving you the ability to protect and remove once more. Not every deck banishes, though it can happen with something as simple as Allure of Darkness. It is handy that a monster that requires two monsters at the minimum to Synchro Summon would have a grave effect allowing it to return, yet that effect isn’t an automatic. It does put your opponent in a bind if banishing is something they do to advance their plays though. 3000ATK is nothing to scoff at and at any point they try to banish/destroy using an effect they will get removed and your monsters will get protection for the turn.

The way you win isn’t through caveman tactics anymore, it hasn’t been for a while now. It is through banishing and destroying through card effects and Gymir Aegirine takes a stand against that. Cost-free protection against Lightning Storm and banishing abilities of monsters, spot removal from monsters, it narrows your opponent to “sending” your monster(s) to the grave for the turn and Gymir Aegirine will at the very least get one monster/card banished through its protection. Pretty good abilities, makes you want to run a few Deep Sea Divas.

We got some new Icejade support in this set as well, as we look at the Synchro Monster the archetype finally has to go with their Tuners, Icejade Gymir Aegirine

Gymir Aegirine is a Level 10 WATER Aqua Synchro with 3000 ATK and 1500 DEF. The ATK is pretty good, and the combination of WATER and Aqua always works. Materials are any WATER Tuner and any non-Tuner(s), so it’s perfect for any WATER strategy that makes Synchros. The first effect is a Quick Effect you can activate to make your face-up monsters unable to be destroyed or banished by card effects from the opponent that turn, then if you used this effect in response to the activation of an opponent’s card or effect and they got cards with that same name on the field and/or in the graveyard, you can banish those cards. The protection effect is pretty good alone, and the option to use this in response to an opponent’s effect to banish their cards can be fairly nice, especially since you banish all their copies if they’re on the field or in the graveyard. The second effect triggers in the graveyard if a card(s) is banished by an opponent’s card effect, letting you revive this card. It’s alright to punish the opponent if they do banish something, letting you revive this and then they have to deal with the first effect once again. It’s reliant on the opponent having cards that banish, but those are fairly more common nowadays than years past. Each effect, of course, is a hard once per turn, which is fine. It’s a pretty solid Synchro, to be honest. The first effect gives good protection and solid removal at the same time, and it is able to revive itself fairly easy, assuming the opponent plays cards that can trigger the revival. It’s not completely generic, but anything using WATER Tuners like Icejade or even Swordsoul could use this as a Level 10 boss monster.

Icejades get a new boss with Icejade Gymir Aegirine, a level 10 WATER Aqua Synchro monster. It needs a WATER Tuner and any non-Tuners; while you’re supposed to summon it with Icejade Creation Aegirocassis and any level 3 monster, Aegirocassis’s strict hard once per turn on per turn makes this impractical, so without the new Icejade card from Cyberstorm Access, you’re stuck with other methods (like, ironically, Swordsoul Strategist Longyuan). While it has a solid 3000 attack, its defense leaves a little to be desired at a paltry 1500, though fortunately there is a way around Lightning Storm if you choose to summon it in attack position.

Aegirine has two hard once per turn effects; the first is a Quick Effect, making your face-up monsters both indestructible and immune to banishing by your opponent’s card effects until the end of the turn. As a bonus, if it was chained to an opponent’s effect activation, you can banish all copies of that card from your opponent’s field and Graveyard. While it doesn’t negate, it can be fairly strong removal, though being reactive hurts its applications as disruption unless your opponent is easily baited. The protection is nice, and arguably is the actual “bonus” effect in this case. I would’ve liked if it protected from bouncing as well, but alas! Aegerine’s other effect can be triggered if your opponent banishes any card by their own card effect while it’s in the Graveyard, letting you Special Summon Aegirine from the Graveyard. Lore-wise this effect is pretty obviously meant to counter enemy Swordsoul monsters, but in practice it won’t come up extremely often. In the current format, Kashtira does banish a lot, but this effect doesn’t matter if Aegirine itself is banished! Despite all of this, Aegerine is still a solid alternative to Swordsoul Supreme Sovereign – Chengying for certain matchups, and a certain new Icejade monster makes both of them very easy to summon. For pure Icejade decks, it’s probably your best bet in terms of monsters on your endboard, as your Traps will be doing the heavy lifting.
