Depending on your perspective, a card like Jeweled Lotus could be either a tantalizing bauble to drive interest in a set, with more style than substance; or a more accessible taste of the legendary power card from the Limited Edition Alpha. The truth is probably not quite either of those two things, as the card often comes down to a simple question: how urgently does your deck need to cast its commander? There is a statistically-uncommon number of hands which can use this to cast a devastating commander on the first turn, and a greater number of hands that can use it to pay a commander tax later in the game. Between those two possibilities, there is enough to warrant exploration of what can be done with the card, though it remains to be seen whether the first one is worth trying to build an entire deck around.

Constructed: 1/5
Casual: 1/5 (assuming no commanders or variants)
Limited: 4/5
Multiplayer: 1/5
Commander: 4/5

Sparkly and sought-after, Jeweled Lotus looks to be the test of the old adage that “any deck is better with a Black Lotus in it”, even with limitations. It enables potentially rude and explosive opening plays with other fast-mana sources and can even be useful late to re-cast a Commander. That said, it’s a limited card without flexibility, even if it’s good enough at the one thing it does, and there might be decks that don’t actually derive great benefit from it.

Constructed: 1 (there are 0-drop artifacts that do things in Legacy)
Casual: 1 (presuming no Commander)
Limited: 4.5
Multiplayer: 1
Commander: 4.75 (powerful, but it might actually be less powerful than it looks, depending on who your deck is helmed by and what its angle of attack is)
