Jinzo – Layered – #DLCS-EN149

2 Level 6 monsters – You can detach 1 material from this card, then target 1 face-up monster your opponent controls; take control of it until the End Phase, but it cannot activate its effects or declare an attack. If a Trap is on the field: You can Tribute 1 monster, and if you do, destroy 1 face-up card on the field. You can only use each effect of “Jinzo – Layered” once per turn.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Jinzo – Layered is the Xyz Jinzo that we got and it doesn’t even inherit Jinzo’s negation ability.

Rank 6 Xyz monsters, generic, same stats as Jinzo. A material for a monster to use for tributes or Extra Deck summon(s) is a good effect, though it is a lesser version of Big Eye. 1-for-1 pop of a card face-up is alright, but you need a face-up trap on the field. Aside from floodgates in games two and three you may not be seeing many Continuous Trap Cards. Golden Lords play them, and some meta decks play floodgate traps, but it may be up to you to play the Continuous Trap to gain this ability from Jinzo – Layered. Spot removal good, but needing that Continuous Trap and then having to tribute a monster (the one you stole with Jinzo – Layered’s first effect) is a steep cost. You’d rather use that stolen monster for Extra Deck stuff unless you were in a simplified game state and this was your push. Jinzo – Layered can deal with two monsters on its own as long as there’s a Continuous Trap on the field and you have a material on him.

Original Jinzo was simple and effective and suffocating. The support Jinzo got was okay. This could have been better. It isn’t bad, but it doesn’t have any negation of Trap cards involved with it, and that is what Jinzo is all about.

The last of the retrains brings us to Espa Roba’s Jinzo getting an Xyz form in Jinzo – Layered.

Jinzo – Layered is a Rank 6 DARK Machine Xyz with 2400 ATK and 1500 DEF. I’m willing to accept Jinzo’s stats on a Rank 6, and it keeps the great DARK/Machine combo. The summoning requirements are any 2 Level 6s, so it’s generic. You can detach a material to target a face-up Monster the opponent controls and take control of it until the End Phase, but it cannot activate its effects or declare an attack. None of the details about stealing the Monster should matter considering you’re likely going to use it for material. It’s basically a Rank 6 Big Eye that can still attack with some downsides attached to stealing the Monster, which is good to add to an already solid Rank 6 pool. The second effect is where if a Trap is on the field, you can tribute a Monster to destroy a face-up card on the field. A decent way to get rid of a floodgate and make use of whatever you stole I guess, a nice throwback to Jinzo as well. You can control the Trap as well, which is nice I guess, but I don’t see this coming up as often. At the very least this is a nice generic Rank 6 to access for any Level 6 centric Deck. A Big Eye for a Rank other than 7 is pretty good.

Throwback Thursday shifts from Synchro to XYZ in a Monster we’ve not reviewed, which is always fun.  Jinzo-Layered (art appropriately named) is a Rank 6 machine, with all the same package as your normal Jinzo.  Only requiring also two Level 6 Monsters to be XYZ Summoned.  So a modified Snatch Steal is equipped, where detaching a Material lets you take an opponent’s Monster for a turn.  It can’t attack or use its effects, however.  You CAN, however, Tribute said Monster, or use it for an Extra Deck play of your own, making the other stuff there more or less irrelevant.  You’re also removing something that you either don’t want to attack or can’t destroy; certainly a good thing.  If a Trap is on the Field, you can Tribute a Monster to destroy a face-up card on the Field.  That’s a fun twist on the original effect of Jinzo, and I’m always a fan of 1-for-1 trades like this.  Each effect is only once per turn.  A wise caution, so you can’t steal all your opponent’s Monsters in one turn and/or fill your board as a result (again likely from the Extra Deck).  This is a nice twist on Jinzo, while solid, but not broken, and fun to use in a Jinzo Theme, or not.

Rating:  3.5/5

Art:  4.5/5  I actually like the background more than the Jinzo, and that outfit.  Sure, he’s layered at the shoulders, but I feel the costume art, and naming, were lazy.
