Junk Converter – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Not a better CotD on the last day before the MR 2020 Revision than a card that helps you get to one of the best Synchros in the new Master Rule, Junk Converter.

Converter is a Level 2 EARTH Warrior with 400 ATK and 200 DEF. I’m getting Machine vibes from this, but I guess that’s whatever. Level 2 is good for Synchros, even when it isn’t a Tuner because of Junk Synchron. Speaking of Junk Synchron, you can discard this card and any Tuner from your hand to search for any Synchron monster out of your Deck. We did lose some of the best Tuners to discard in Glow-Up Bulb, but you still got one of this card’s best search targets with Junk Synchron. Discard this, search Junk Synchron, summon Junk Synchron to revive Junk Converter in order to summon Junk Speeder and have that spam out Tuners while this gets its effect. You can search other Synchrons if you need, but Junk Synchron is probably the go-to with this while Tuning will get any other one. If this card is sent to the grave as Synchro Material, you can target a Tuner in your graveyard and Special Summon it in Defense Position, but it cannot activate its effects that turn. Easy help for extending any Synchro plays. This can help summon a Crystal Wing easily, or the card we end the week with. Each effect of Junk Converter is a hard once per turn, which is more than fair. The card allows for some good plays for Synchrons enough to max out on this just like you do with Tuning.

Junk Converter is a good searcher for the archetype, even if it is a -1.

A double discard to search the deck is a hefty cost that better pay off. If you search Junk Synchron and it gets negated, you’ve lost three cards for nothing. Good news though, if you search Junk Synchron with Junk Converter, you can bring back Converter with Synchron (or possibly the card you sent with Junk Synchron). It gives you back a Tuner when used for a Synchro, and it not being selective on what Synchro you summon is good, giving you leeway to go after stuff like Scrap Dragon or Black Rose. There are a host of Tuner monsters you can bring back, not just Synchron monsters, again, not being selective helsp this card. What doesn’t help this card is the latest ban list. Not sure when we’re playing again, but some of the best Tuner monsters just hit the list, which hurts this card.

Despite that, Junk Converter can be a momentum building card, or a total wash depending on the situation. Synchron use their graveyard well, even when stuff doesn’t go their way. Optimal play would be ditching this and a Tuner, search Junk Synchro, Special Summon this, Synchro, then get your Tuner back and Synchro again. We’re Synchro climbing again, it’s been too long.

Speaking of combo-centric cards, here we look at Junk Converter.  Much like yesterday, the stats here are rather undesirable, but rather irrelevant.  Earth, Warrior, Level 2 with 400 attack and 200 defense, and notably not a Tuner.  Not that ALL Yusei’s cards were Tuners, but it seems like it would help.  Though this card does help you fetch a Tuner, and that seems Yusei appropriate.

You discard this card AND a Tuner to fetch any Synchron Monster you want from your Deck.  I like that it can be any Synchron part, and I’m not even necessarily upset you’re giving up 2 cards for 1 (an obvious -1 here) but I feel you’re giving up too much for not enough in return.  If this is used as Synchro Material and sent to the Graveyard, you can Target and Special Summon a Tuner in your Graveyard.

Said Monster is Special Summoned in Defense position and has its effect(s) negated.  That’s pretty standard text, but this effect to me is much better than the first.  Since this card isn’t a Tuner, you’re probably using this to bring out something lower Level, given this guy is only Level 2 (unless you played Level manipulation).  This card is much more specific and combo oriented than yesterday.  Not as good either, but not bad.

Art:  4/5  Robo-human again, but this guy is a little more bland and grey (literally) than yesterday.  Nice blues in the background though.
