You can play Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey as either Kassandra or her brother Alexios, but as the card suggests, Kassandra is considered the canonical protagonist of the game. The game stirred me a lot more than some from the preceding years, because of all the references to Greek mythology and history – I ran across the ruins of Odysseus’ palace and had to put the controller down for a minute. (I actually missed Origins, but suspect I would have had a reaction in the same vein there. Maybe I’ll get to it at some point!) A corollary to that is that the Odyssey-themed cards in this set will probably go well with your Theros-themed cards, even if the historical setting means they use equipment more than auras.

Speaking of equipment, Kassandra’s card does seem to expect that you’ll be playing specifically with the Spear of Leonidas, which is often considered a strike against a card. People don’t always like having their deckbuilding constrained by specific names, but in this case, the Spear is powerful enough that I think a lot of aggressive decks would be looking at it even without the Eagle Bearer. And besides, Kassandra also has that second ability: it might also feel restrictive, since most equipment is not designed for legendary theme decks. We really have to break out of some of these tropes that have been going around for decades now. I find it hard to believe that people are going to be complaining much about using cards like Icingdeath and Anduril, nor that the segment of the public that seems to like drawing cards a little too much is really going to disregard another way to do it.

Constructed: 3.5 (not as universal as Stoneforge Mystic, but more aggressive)

Multiplayer: 4
Commander [EDH]: 4

Kassandra, Eagle Bearer is one of the two possible protagonists of the Ancient Greek-themed Odyssey, and she’s a pretty interesting execution for a card. She brings a legendary stabby spear with her when she hits play, and while The Spear of Leonidas isn’t absolutely phenomenal, it is a solid, value-accruing way to get your stab on, and she can fetch it from anywhere but exile.

Speaking of that, she’s pretty solid overall, and she actually pairs extremely well with the Spear. If you use the ability to give her double strike, she can draw up to 2 cards on an attack (or do the same for another creature). Boros is infamous for running low on gas at times, but she’s good at pumping more gas into the engines with little effort. Considering she only costs 2 mana, this is great value. I don’t know if she’s good enough for Modern, but I do think she’s usable in that regard.
