A lot of people are saying that Ketramose might be one of the best cards in Modern right now, which says a lot about him considering how fast and orthogonal to most people’s normal that format has become. But after all, he’s at or near the maximum amount of mana people pay for things in eternal formats, and the patterns that Modern does consider normal tend to support what he’s doing regardless of what he does. I’m thinking of mechanics like delve and individual cards like Psychic Frog. Formats like that, plus the big casual settings, have lots of opportunities to build around him, which may be harder to do in Standard and especially limited. But once you successfully do so, he’s very hard to stop and he keeps his controller on top of the game – I’m honestly a little surprised how many advantages they managed to put on just the one card. I guess it makes up for his active condition being hard to meet if you add him to a random deck.
I’ll come back to this in the gameplay-free review, but if you read up on Ketramose’s backstory, it’s one of the things that most makes me wish that the planes in Aetherdrift could each have gotten their own set, or at least a lot more story. He emerged from the reeds like baby Moses, and he heralds the rebirth and resurgence of Naktamun like some kind of Egyptian-infused analogue of Aslan. That is far, far too much awesome to be contained in just one card.

Ketranose, the New Dawn adds to the pantheon of Amonkhet in an interesting way, a decently implacable body when able to attack. Seven cards in exile is an amount that takes a bit of work to get to, but when it shines, it shines quite bright; turning exiling effects into a Phyrexian Arena-style boon is quite efficacious, and it triggers on your turn regardless of source. If you have ways to exile repeatedly, this can really get going, and it’s also quite good at recouping the life loss when it’s able to attack. The only real issue is that Ketranose needs outside support to get going…but once you get there, it does quite nice things.
