Hello Pojo Fans,

Knew it was only a matter of time before we reviewed Ryu-Ge. Lets get into it with Kyoro Ryu-Ge Kaiva and their Continuous Spell Dino Domains

Each of the Ryu-Ge monsters have an effect that involves them being used to fetch their specific Continuous Spell. For Kaiva it is being shuffled back into the Deck from the hand. No worries about cycling back Kaiva, you can search it or any of the Ryu-Ge monsters with the Pendulum Ryu-Ge monster: Sosei Ryu-Ge Mistva while it is a Pendulum Spell, or Ryu-Ge War Zone (a card that isn’t limited to just Ryu-Ge monsters). Each of the Ryu-Ge monsters work with their Type, and Kaiva is a Dinosaur and it sure works with the strategy of pop and benefit from it.

Whenever two or more cards are destroyed anywhere during the turn you can Special Summ Kaiva from the hand. The cards don’t need to be destroyed all at once which puts your opponent on the backfoot when they know you’re playing Ryu-Ge, and as a Quick Effect you can Special Summon Kaiva to recover during your opponent’s turn. Each Ryu-Ge monster places their specific Continuous Spell onto the field once per turn, and Ryu-Ge Rising can search out a Ryu-Ge monster to replace the one you used to get to that Continuous Spell.

Kaiva can place its Continuous Spell to the bottom of the Deck to destroy cards on the field. The more Types on the field, the more cards Kaiva can destroy. This will always be a 1-for-1 at the least and with the other Continuous Spells for the archetype being able to search Kaiva’s Continuous Spell, as well as Kaiva itself, you aren’t losing advantage. With so many Dinosaur-Type monsters enabling advantage off of destruction, Kaiva is able to fit in seamlessly within the Dino archetypes to add another Level 10 3000ATK big body with some decent removal ability as long as you play that Continuous Spell.

Speaking of that Spell, Ryu-Ge Realm – Dino Domains will give all Ryu-Ge monsters 300extra ATK, which they don’t need, but thanks anyways. Not sure if you’re playing more than one copy, but if you are, you cannot have both on the field at the same time. Once per turn, Dino Domains can act as a negation to a monster effect. You have to control Kaiva (since it’s a Dino), or a Ruy-Ge Pendulum Monster, and the monster who is activating the effect has to have lower ATK than Kaiva or Mistva, so I guess the 300ATK extra from the Continuous Spell could come into play in a tiebreaker situation. The effect does not destroy, which is a downer, but I suppose it could be a balancing effect because of the power Ryu-Ge possess.

Great synergy within its Type (feel like I’m gonna say that two more times this week) and easy to summon (another trait I’ll prolly say again a few times). You have to play the Continuous Spell with each to activate their good effect, and with Kaiva the more Types the better but that also enables a chance of it getting negated. No destruction off negation sucks but if you stop their starter for the turn you may have them. One more downer: the monster being negated with Dino Domains HAS to be on the field, so no hand trap negation…bummer.

The final archetype of Crossover Breakers, Ryu-Ge, is finally up, where we’ll cover all three Effect Monsters with their respective Realm card before we get to the boss, so we’ll start with the first of the main trio: Kyoro Ryu-Ge Kaiva and Ryu-Ge Realms – Dino Domains.

Kaiva is a Level 10 EARTH Dinosaur with 3000 ATK and 1200 DEF. Big ATK for any monster, EARTH is solid, and Dinosaur is rich in support ever since 2017. The first effect lets you shuffle this card into the Deck to add a Ryu-Ge Realms – Dino Domains from the Deck to the hand, which we’ll get to in a second, but it’s good to be searchable. During the Main Phase, if 2 or more cards were destroyed this turn, you got a Quick Effect allowing you to Special Summon this card from the hand, which isn’t the worst summoning condition to meet, especially if you’re playing Dinosaurs considering how often you’ll destroy Babycerasaurus or Petiteranodon with various effects, but you can also just run into the opponent’s monsters to destroy them in battle and then get this out in the Battle Phase. Finally, you can place a Ryu-Ge Realms – Dino Domains on your field back to the bottom of your Deck to target other cards on the field up to the number of different Monster Types on the field and destroy them, which is decent removal with an archetype that has 4 different Types in it by itself, not to mention what else you might be running. HOPT on each effect is standard. Kaiva is good, mainly for putting itself back to get Dino Domains and then summoning it from the Deck via Ryu-Ge War Zone after you get the Pendulum of the archetype in the Extra Deck. Play 1-2, Decks relying on big monsters like this are bricky, so you’ll want some outside engine or another strategy to play alongside it as well.

Now for Dino Domains, a Continuous Spell you can only control 1 of, which I guess Kaiva can just put this back to the Deck so you can use another. Your Ryu-Ge monsters gain 300 ATK, which adds up on monsters that all have at least 3000 ATK by themselves. Ryu-Ge Pendulum Monsters and any Level 10 or higher monsters whose original Type is Dinosaur gains the effect where when the effect of a monster with less ATK than it is activated, you get the Quick Effect option to place a Ryu-Ge Continuous Spell to the bottom of the Deck to negate the activation. Good negation for Kaiva or the boss monster of this archetype, but funny enough you could also give this effect to Ultimate Conductor Tyranno. Either way, anything with over 3000 ATK having this effect should be able to negate almost any monster effect. Dino Domains is pretty solid for the effect it gives to your big monsters, the 300 ATK boost is just a nice little bonus. You only need 1, as you shouldn’t have too much of an issue getting to it, but just hope you don’t draw it with Kaiva in hand, unless you can summon said Kaiva that turn.

We’re finishing up our Crossover Breakers coverage with the lame duck of the set, the iill-fated Ryu-Ge archetype, which was hyped up as a powerful deck when combined with Swordsoul and Voiceless Voice, but unfortunately fell short compared to its compatriots. Because of how the deck works, this week will be full of double features: today’s pair is Kyoro Ryu-Ge Kaiva and Ryu-Ge Realm – Dino Domains. Kaiva is a level 10 EARTH Dinosaur, naturally giving it synergy with Dinosaur support, though you’d be hard-pressed to see it outside of Ryu-Ge focused builds. Notably, it being level 10 is most helpful for making Trains or Varudras, the Final Bringer of End Times, which is basically the deck’s wincon in a nutshell. Kaiva comes with a solid 3000 attack for a level 10 monster, though its miserably 1200 defense leaves a lot to be desired.

The Ryu-Ge monsters say a lot, but the main trio has a similar set of three core hard once per turn effects– a way to search their respective Continuous Spells, a way to Special Summon themselves, then something else. In the case of Kaiva, it’ll search Dino Domains by shuffling itself back into the deck from your hand. We’ll get to Dino Domains in a bit, but unlike the other Ryu-Ge monsters, Kaiva doesn’t help set up its own summon. That brings us to its second effect, a Quick Effect that lets you Special Summon Kaiva during the Main Phase as long as 2 or more cards were destroyed that turn. The deck’s boss monster helps get one destruction, but without help from Dinosaur support or other external engines, getting the second destruction is nigh impossible! As a result, the only plausible way to actually summon Kaiva in pure builds is Ryu-Ge War Zone, that is, the only reason the deck functions at all. Kaiva’s final effect lets you place a Dino Domains from your field on the bottom of your deck to target and destroy any other cards on the field, up to the number of different monster types on the field. This is meant to help you destroy your own Dinosaur monsters to enable your combos or break your opponent’s board after swarming the field with Ryu-Ge monsters, but frankly you’re much better off keeping Dino Domain on the field unless you really need this to get rid of your opponent’s board. Overall, a highly underwhelming monster in Ryu-Ge proper, but you’ll need it since Dino Domain is probably the most useful of the Ryu-Ge Continuous Spells. You’ll definitely need Dinosaur support, though!

+Can help with Dinosaur combos or breaking your opponent’s board
+Searches Dino Domains
-Almost impossible to summon without external Dinosaur support
-(This will be on almost every Ryu-Ge card) Horrible brick

In terms of a slightly less depressing card, we now have Kaiva’s associated Continuous Spell, Ryu-Ge Realm – Dino Domain. Like the others, you can only control one Dino Domain at a time, and its first effect will boost the attack of all of your Ryu-Ge monsters by 300. This is easily the weakest effect among the Ryu-Ge Realm cards, so let’s pretend it doesn’t exist. Instead, let’s focus on its other effect, which grants a bonus effect to Ryu-Ge Pendulum monsters (that is, the deck’s boss) as well as level 10 monsters that were originally Dinosaur type. This bonus effect is a soft once per turn Quick Effect to negate the activation of a monster effect from a monster with less attack by placing a Ryu-Ge Continuous Spell on the bottom of your deck, mirroring Kaiva. While not as versatile as the Sea Serpent Spell, it’s still a monster negate at the end of the day, which is always solid to have. The only problem is needing to play Kaiva, a small price to pay to get to Dino Domain. Voiceless hybrids will use this as the Continuous Spell of choice as Kaiva is the least-bad monster to search with War Zone. Of course, you’re probably better off with pure Voiceless than running all of these bricks…

+Solid monster negate
+Fairly good synergy with Kaiva and War Zone
-Does nothing substantial on its own
-Just one of many bricks in a bricky deck
