Lightning Storm – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review

Lightning Storm: Currently the most expensive tier 1 card and one of the most sought after cards.

Really easy here: play it if you have access to it. No deck should say no to this, not even decks that abstain from running spells, it’s that damn good. Controlling no face-up cards is not hard to do, and that is its only restriction aside from the hard once per turn restriction many cards have now. Wiping all attack monsters your opponent controls or all their spell/trap is absolutely broken. It is Harpies Feather Duster or Lightning Vortex without the discard. You are going to hold this card if your opponent has defensive monsters, and with Links being unable to defend they are prime targets for this, or you’ll blast their back row because there is no restriction on that.

We have Raigeki, but we don’t have Harpies Feather Duster (Limited in OCG). We needed a card that could do what it can, but put a check on it to make it balanced (sort of). Lightning Storm does that. It is a game-finishing or game-changing card when played. It should be played for max damage. The idea that you can draw that turn one and punish your opponent for overextending is fantastic.

It’s time to take a look at the new $100 card in town, Lightning Storm.

Lightning Storm is a Normal Spell that can only be activated when you control no face-up cards, which is basically before you do anything whatsoever or your remaining cards are set on the field. The first option you got is to destroy all Attack Position monsters that your opponent controls, meaning this is a mini-Raigeki in a sense that it doesn’t destroy Defense Position monsters, but that won’t matter as much since most monsters sit in Attack Position typically. Your opponent could play around that, though. The second effect is more preferred as it destroys all your opponent’s Spells and Traps, making it Harpie’s Feather Duster that’s at 3 since the original version is banned here in the TCG still and probably didn’t come back mostly to sell this card to players. Having a Harpie’s Feather Duster in your back pocket is still great to have, even if it has a small restriction on it. It’s most certainly a going-second card and one that might be a good Side Deck choice when you know your opponent is going to prefer to go first. It’s a hard once per turn, so you can never get both effects in one turn, but other than that it doesn’t matter. Lighting Storm is something I’d say to use 3 of in the Side Deck or Main if it fits in well there, I just hope you can afford a playset.

What happens when Lightning Vortex and Harpie’s Feather Duster have a baby?  Lightning Storm is created.  This card is simple.  Very good, and very simple.  You have to control no face-up cards (note, not NO cards, just none face-up) and you get to either destroy all Attack position Monsters your opponent controls.  OR you can destroy all their Magic and Trap cards.

You can only activate one of these a turn.  Which is beyond appropriate, or else you’d be able to activate both effects (one off of each separate card) in the same turn.  And that would just be too much to do, and possibly a game changing/winning move in one turn.  Despite being able to use one in a turn, I’d say there’s no reason not to use more than one in a Deck if you have the room.

It’s a great card to get out of a tight spot.  It’s more of a defensive card, no doubt, but can absolutely let you go on the offensive after using.  

Rating:  4.25/5 (but +.25 for each copy you use past the first)

Art:  Raigeki is definitely cooler, but I like the blue sky/storm/chaos going on with this a LOT, so 5/5
