Lonefire Blossom – Yu-Gi-Oh! Review (2008)

Lonefire Blossom is the Throwback Thursday choice this week, and what a card this monster has been throughout Yu-Gi-Oh’s history.

Back in the day, and even within the last five years, Lonefire was a card you could run 3 of in a deck alongside a Plant monster and not end up messing up your deck. You’d funnel through your Lonefires like you would Toon Table of Contents until you got to what you wanted and now you had monsters in the grave for Monster Reborn or Pot of Avarice or worse for your opponent…Debris Dragon. You could also copy it with Spore, but Lonefire was a card to go through your deck and get to a monster. Any Plant-Type monster is available, giving you access to powerful low level Tuners like Spore and Glow-Up Bulb, or high ATK plants like Giga Plant or Tytannial. Searchable with Sangan or Witch back when you could activate the searched monster the same turn you searched it, Lonefire was dangerous in any deck, but so much more in Plants.

This card has been a great card dating back to its release in 2008, and unless they change it to “once per turn” for activating Lonefire Blossom, the only thing that can, and has slowed it down is the banlist.

Throwback Thursday has one of the best Plant cards ever printed: Lonefire Blossom.

Lonefire is a Level 3 FIRE Plant with 500 ATK and 1400 DEF. Meh stats on Level 3, FIRE is fine and Plant is great. It’s lone effect is a soft once per turn to tribute any Plant you control to summon any Plant from Deck. The fact this floats into a whole type is insane actually, and it’s easy to do just by a tribute of a Plant, which Lonefire is. You got Plant archetypes like Predaplant, Sylvan, Rikka, and Aroma just to name a few on top of the Plant Princesses, Spore, and Glow-Up Bulb/Dandylion (when legal) as options to get from Deck. It also floats into itself to really thin the Deck since again, the effect is a soft once per turn. This card alone is probably why Symbol of Heritage is currently Limited. It’s shocking to have three of this in a format, but it’s fine considering it’s been a bit since Plants really broke into the meta. Once they come back to meta relevance, I can see Lonefire going back to Limited status. It’s that great of a Plant card, easily a 3 of for anything using Plants.

This was released ~13 years ago?  At the time of its release, Without any level restrictions, decks were able to get a 6 cost Gigaplant and even higher cost ones with a 3 cost Lonefire, which was a big power creep at the time.  What initially kept this card balanced was the very limited pool of plant creatures, but as more cards came out, it was able to search Spore and Dandylion for Synchros. Imo, it was a mistake to buff plants this way and it would’ve been better (at the time) to spread out the support amongst a couple of good cards instead of rely on 1 cornerstone card.

Lonefire Blossom is the card that originally made Plants playable. Combined with cards like Gigaplant (and many more) you can’t really go wrong with it.

I would say this card is definitely ban-worthy by all criteria. It has no built in restrictions on what it can summon or how many individual cards per turn can be activated. It can also use itself for the Tribute, which is generally what is done.

Any Plant based deck probably runs 3 copies of this card in it by default for its search power, but since it can search for itself, you can thin three cards out of the deck for GY fodder or just improved consistency. It does wonders for Black Garden as well, allowing you to place just the right amount of Plants on the field to either congest the opponent’s Main Monster Zones or to Special Summon whatever Monster in the GY you need at the time. Being able to just summon any Plant from the deck, though, is overpowered without the need for complex combos.

The art of Lonefire Blossom has always been appealing to me. It seems to paint a hellscape of sorts, and you can make out a lot of details in the design if you scrutinize it enough.

I score this card 5/5. I dislike the imbalance, but as it is an unlimited card, I recommend it in any Plant themed deck.
