I think it’s funny that in just a few years, we gained enough creatures with appropriate names to make an explorer-themed pseudo-kindred deck in combination with the scattered older ones. Selvala is the obvious choice for the expedition’s leader, but Loot would probably be the one the viewing audience most wants to see, and quite understandably so. Either of his abilities would probably be good enough on their own – this type of land ramp is well established and can be very effective, and looking at six extra cards a turn is great selection even with a restriction. The fact that they feed each other is what puts him over the top, and I think he’s sure to be a hit at casual tables; and maybe at tournament tables too, if there’s a deck that can make the time and space in a match to get him rolling.

Loot, Exuberant Explorer has a fitting enough name, as well as a potentially scary ability tied to his passive indirectly. Esploration has long been an ability with some less-subtle utility and subtle value besides, and while Loot’s not the cheapest version of the ability, it is tied to a decently duravle body and isn’t its most expensive exemplar. Notably, if you have enough lands, this does let you curve Loot into activating its ability the next turn, and up to a free six drop seems potentially scary…though I suppose it’s not “free”, per se, but you can still pull some shenanigans, and this even scales well into a later game. It’s not a star, but a creature like this is always very good at greasing a deck’s wheels.

Constructed: 3.75 (not going to win games on its own, but good for helping you get there)
Casual: 4.5
Limited: 3.75 (can maybe help you accelerate your way out of a stall)
Multiplayer: 3.5
Commander [EDH]: 4
