Hello Pojo Fans,

Macro Cosmos is our Throwback Thursday choice, a choice that is Unlimited in the OCG, but Limited in the TCG.

Never used for its first effect, Macro Cosmos had been a tremendous side deck, and at times, main deck card for years before becoming limited. While limited now, many players still have it in their side deck. Any card going to the graveyard is banished. Plain and simple to use, devastating against several archetypes. Any deck revolving around heavy graveyard use fears this card. Any card with the word “graveyard” in its name ultimately becomes useless if Macro Cosmos is on the field. It helps to lock down decks like Dino and slow decks like ABC and eliminate resources like in Trickstar. This card could see more play with the release of Sky Striker cards and their dependence on Spell Cards in the graveyard.

Even at one it is a great card for the side deck. If it ever comes back to 3, you may see the return of Banish Return-style decks.

It would seem from the reviews that I have missed that I am afraid of Vampires. I’ll have to keep this in mind. Anyway, Macro Cosmos is archetype support that no one uses except for the secondary effect. This Continuous Trap makes all cards headed for the grave be banished instead. Lots of decks get completely recked by this such as Pendulums, Sky Striker, Zombies, Lightsworns. Many engines just won’t work at all. Certain cards need to go to the grave to fulfill their conditions. Any deck that has no grave effects should play this limited to 1 card. While it is more fun to play Dark Law, Macro Cosmos is technically harder to negate and is only one card where Dark Law costs 2. Just make sure it doesn’t hurt you more than your opponent.

Throwback Thursday this week lets us look at a classic Continuous Trap Floodgate that is currently Limited, Macro Cosmos.

Macro Cosmos when activated can let you Special Summon a Helios – The Primordial Sun from your hand or deck. Helios isn’t that good where you should be running it in every deck you put this in. You don’t have to do this, but whether you do or not, this effect means that Macro Cosmos can be negated by Solemn Warning, which shouldn’t be a major issue with it being limited and we got a ton of backrow removal to where using Solemn Warning on this might not be necessary. While Macro Cosmos is face-up, all cards that would be sent to the GY are banished instead. Yes, the banish part is why this is limited. Being able to shut down the GY by banishing everything can get annoying for some decks, especially if they highly rely on the GY to play. Macro Cosmos is a simple floodgate that works well against certain GY based decks, play your one copy if your deck can make good use of it.

The straight remove from play mechanic is definitely a fun one, and one you need to build a Deck around.  Macro Cosmos does specifically aide the Helios Deck (remember those cards) as unplayable as a whole as those may be.  While this is active, any card sent to the Graveyard is instead removed from play.  Not just Monsters, but ANY card that is.  It’s similar to, and slightly slower than, Dimensional Fissure, which is a Continuous Magic card (but also only removes all Monsters sent to the Graveyard) so you get more versatility here in losing that bit of speed.  There are themes you can build this with and around too, but this more or less has to be the focal point of the Deck, or it’s only going to hurt you more than help.  Still a solid enough card to build a Deck around though.

Rating:  3.5/5  Constructed for sure, but can be worth it.

**Worth noting, this could actually be a viable play in Traditional, because despite the broken cards available (I’m looking at you CED) this would protect you from CED blowing up the world, as the cards would be removed, instead of sent to the Graveyards.  Just something to think about.  So my rating actually applies to both formats today
