Magcargo (CES 24) returned to the Pokemon TCG in the Celestial Storm expansion set.  Magcargo paired best with Zoroark GX, Swampert, and Oranguru (SUM) and gave players that employed it a significant advantage with its ability to grab the single most important card you would need in any given turn and then actually put that card directly into your hand as well.

I’m guilty of forgetting about this card.  There’s really no excuse not to use it, especially now that we have Ditto Prism (man I wish that card weren’t a Prism Star!).  Even if you don’t have Zoroark GX or Oranguru or some other means of non Supporter draw, just being able to control what you top deck is a HUGE advantage.  Since rotation, I’ve gone a total of 53 W 61 L against decks that run Magcargo (46%).  Over that same time frame, I’m a total of 585 W 532 L (52%) overall.  Unfortunately, I don’t track cards that I run in every deck, so I can’t tell you exactly how well I’ve done with Magcargo myself, but I know I should definitely be plugging this into more of my lists.

I’m not the only person not playing this card, though.  Of the thirty or so decklists available from Harrgogate, only six lists carried Magcargo.  Something to think about, if you’ve got an extra card slot or two, Magcargo might be worth adding in to your list.

Conclusion

And I’ll say this: the guys who design these cards really know how to laugh at themselves.  What have been the best cards in the game this year?  A giant misquito with the nickname Protein Shake, a purple upside down squid, an orangutan, a sentient piece of silly putty, and a really hot snail.   Now go look at the cards for Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh.  I don’t know anything about those games, but I really like that Pokemon isn’t afraid of designing cards that make you laugh.
