Varchild's
War-Riders + Subterranean Spirit (a.k.a. the
Subbie) = greatness combo. :) Okay, that's
the only real known combo for this guy. He's
fast, but just not big enough to justify the cost.
In
limited, no way. Giving your opponent mega
amounts of critters, no matter the size, is BAD.

Ah, quick Red beatdown.
On turn 2, you throw down a 3/4 and let the beats
begin. Yeah, your opponent gets a 1/1 token on
your upkeep, but since you have Trample AND
Rampage, they will still be behind the gun. You
will at the very least get a good jump on them,
and with the right deck may be able to finish them
off. Maybe with a little bit o' Earthquake to
rattle their 1/1's off the board....I have to say
I like Judge Bill's idea of Lure with this.
In limited, fast
big beats are almost never a bad idea. But just
make sure the rest of your deck follows the
aggressive fast beats theme, or you could
eventually get overrun by 1/1's.

Another card with a
severe upkeep. Giving an opponent 1/1's isn't
something that would generally help you. But use
cards like Lure and Caltrops, and you have a
high potential for abuse, since the Caltrops
will stop them from attacking, and the Lure will
force them to block, making the War Riders huge
(due to rampage) and killing your the tokens,
so the upkeep problem really isn't a problem.
This also has some
minor political influences in multiplayer, but
since I don't play multiplayer much, I'll stop
here.

Varchild's War-riders
Well, it's 2 mana for a 3/4, but you ensure your
opponent can always block
with at least 1 critter, meaning at best a
constant 2 points of damage,
while giving him a horde of other creatures to
smash your face with. Good
if you want your opponent to have creatures, and
lots of 'em.

This thing is really powerful for only 1R. I had a lot
of good ideas using this card... 2nd turn
Varchild's War-Riders, 3rd turn plague spitter...
but when this was ext legal so was force of will.
=(
Still I think its a very under looked
card. The fact that it makes a little combo in
itself is neat, and its really beefy for early
game. Maybe use engineered plague... I dunno but
you have to always have a 2 card combo with this
card. And most good tourney cards nowadays aren't
card combos, but more like good synenergy. (The
rock for example, or G/U madness.)
In limited its more
questionable... play it wait 2 turns then let it
die maybe? Nah.... not worth your time here...
Sealed it might be
better... but still no where near enough to play
effectively.
Constructed: 3.5 -Hey, in the right deck, its definitely
a 3.5 =D
