Rager has been a
solid choice in both limited and constructed
since his release. A free card plus a 2/2
creature at a cost of 2B and 1 life is a
very fair deal and fits favorably into the
plans of many a black mage. I think he
becomes even better in limited where many
times a 2/2 for 3 mana is usable without
much of an ability so the free card is
almost like pennies from heaven. Overall a
solid card with a fair cost.

A
well-cost creature and a card all for 3
mana? Not bad. Blue mages will hate
bouncing this guy, and other black mages can't
deal with his real efficiently. The loss of life
isn't horrible for the card. I think people
played with that Necro card...

This guy is one of the top grey
ogres ever printed. The fact that he replaces
himself at a minimum cost (1 life) means that your
investment in him is minimal. He provides a body
that trades with FTK and with a slew of other
creatures. Currently only seeing play in the
Braids deck, this guy will always see some play.
Maybe they'll reprint him!

As far as cantrips go... you can't ask for much
more. As a standard rule adding the cantrip
ability "draw a card" to any normal
spell adds 2 colorless mana to the base spell.
For example: Unsummon cost only U to bounce
a creature. Repulse did the same thing for
2U and you get to draw a card as well.
In comparision (and by the way, Repulse is an
excellent cantrip) Phyrexian Rager is even a
bigger bargain than Repulse. The typical
cost for a vanila 2/2 creature has been 2X, much
like Pearled Unicorn. Phyrexian Rager is
hands down beter than Pearled Unicorn as you get a
2/2 AND draw a card and the only extra cost you
pay is a single life. IMO paying one life is
much sexier than paying 2 extra colorless mana.
As a result, Phyrexian Rager is an efficient
creature that has seem play in several constructed
decks and is a great 3 drop in any limited
environment.

Phyrexian Rager
is a nice little card, packing an useful ability
with a solid body. No matter the format, a
decently priced creature with a card drawing
ability is useful, and this guy is no
exception.
While it won't often be
spectacular, it should rarely disappoint you.

The
Rager is one of the best 3-drop for current type 2
if you're playing black. Its inherent card
advantage makes it a solid addition to any weenie
black deck. It fits very well into the Braid's
archetype. Its also very solid in Limited. Not a
first pick, but good. Constructed a 3, Limited a
3. |
