Vine Trellis is
Wizards replacement for Llanowar Elves. But by
doing so, they have slowed down the environment as
Trellis costs 2 to get into play. As Judge Bill
points out, you're usually looking to get out your
3 drops early. Trellis instead of Llanowar Elves
breaks up the tempo enough in that it will slow
down decks considerably. We'll have to wait and
see just how big of an impact this will have on
the environment after 8th becomes legal.
In limited, it's a
good wall that will hold off a morph or early
casted creature, while gaining you a bit of
acceleration if needed.

Our replacement for
Llanowar Elves, as it lost the vote to Birds. It
has a large rear, which can be helpful in some
situations. However, it costs 2 mana. This is to
supposedly alleviate being able to have 2 1cc
mana producers, which makes the environment "too
fast" (read: People can't play their big
stuff, as your important stuff gets out
too quickly with Birds and Elves in. TIM-MAH!!!)
Anyway, because it
costs 2 mana, it is less likely to be played, as
you want to accelerate to 3 mana most of the
time, and not 4 mana. The butt helps, but not
really.
In limited, the
larger butt is more important than the mana
ability. You'll typically want to play it for
its blocking capabilities, and the mana ability
is just a bonus.
