Hmm... 6 for a 4/4
Firebreather....with mountaincycling. I've seen
that he often makes the cut in red based limited
decks. But I just can't see it making the grade in
a constructed arena unless mountaincycling becomes
really important as time goes on.

Red does NOT want to
pay 6 mana for a creature like this. I'll take
an extra point of power and toughness for the
same converted mana cost, thanks. The
Mountaincycling is bad, because this card wants
to be both a beater and a mana smoother, and
it's out of place on both counts.
In limited, he's
better, since you can afford to have both on one
card.

Chartooth Cougar
My least favorite of the landcyclers (although
arguably not the worst), he's
still good. He'd be better with haste instead of
firebreathing, but as
always, fetching a mountain makes up for any
weaknesses. He's a beast too,
and because of that he may see some play in
constructed as well
(beast-bidding anyone?)

In limited its a decent beast with an alternate
cost. Worth playing, however probably the worst of
the land cyclers. Mainly because he doesn't have
any real bombishness to himself, and he has no
evasion. Just a 4/4 firebreather.
In constructed he has mountain cycling.

Chartooth Cougar
Constructed-This is just too expensive for
Red whose strength of maximizing the mana curve
doesn't really benefit from landscycling. 1.0
Limited-If I'm going Red in Limited and think
about
spending 6 mana, it's going to be for a flying
Dragon.
Landcycling is its only saving grace if you're
forced
into it. 1.5
Casual Constructed-Pumpers are always nice,
especially
when you can pump the attack, but Red has plenty
of
options that are much cheaper if you want to go
that
route. Again, if I'm spending that much mana on
Red,
it's going to be for a dragon or even consider
paying
one more for Searing Flesh to send 7 to the dome.
1.0
Casual Group-A common theme for group play is
games
tend to progress more slowly allowing for larger
creatures to hit the floor, so if the Cougar is
going
to find a home, it's here. A 4/4 for 6 that pumps
will help in these drawn out games. The need for
land
isn't so great so the landcycling doesn't do you
alot
of good unless you're using it to beef up a Storm
mechanic. 2.0 |
