Pojo's Magic The Gathering
Card of the Day

Familiar - Umm.... okay. I think when Andy picked
this weeks cards he must have just chosen them at
random, the only qualification being they had to
be generally unplayable commons. Sorry, I just
can't find a reason to ever include this in a
constructed deck in any format. Of course, now
that I've said that, next week it will turn out to
be the hottest new card in some insano deck. Not.

I suppose you could
build a deck around this, especially in Mirrodin
constructed. The two mana you are paying for a
1/1 flier is about on par for a vanilla blue 1/1
flier (vanilla = a creature with no abilities),
so it's like you're getting the ability for
free. If you build your deck so that (a) it's
full of artifacts, giving you a very small
chance of a wasted card, or (b) you can stack
the top of your deck before you play this
(Scroll Rack), then you've got yourself a fine
effect.
I've tried this in a
couple of my draft decks, and it doesn't pass
muster, even with the high number of artifacts.
It's just too weak of an effect to justify its
place in the deck.

Um. No thanks. Two mana, 1/1. Unless you're
playing a deck that is either
literally starved for creatures, or are really
scared of nim shriekers, or
have a deck that is 90% artifact so it's an almost
sure cantrip, this guy
doesn't see play. Even worse in constructed.

In the current affinity build, it COULD possibly,
maybe see some play.
However I doubt it. Affiinity has card draw as it
is. Don't get me wrong,
card advantage is good, this guy just won't cut
the mustard. In limited hes
a little better, because of the fact he flies.
Other then that, not much to
say.

This might be useful in some Mirrodin Block decks
that require many artifacts (Affinity). It can
fetch any artifact if you stack the deck right. In
Type 2 no artifact deck has taken control so it's
less useful. In Mirrodin Limited, if you're
playing blue and you got a lot of artifacts, go
for it. The 1/1 body might be fragile but it's
still a flier.

The ability is not
all that crash hot. If you want a 1/1 flier for
1U, go with Sage Owl. In limited, it is still a
flier, and you don't find too many of those
these days.
