03.15.04  -  Affinity Deck Fix

Hello out there in magic land its time for another wonderful episode of Jason’s Deck Garage. Well its been another week and this week we will be looking at a deck that will be showing up a lot on the magic scene in the months to come. The deck fix is an affinity deck that is four cards short of being a build of the Arcbound Ravager deck that made its impact felt last week at the German Regionals Tournaments. As usual I have included some additional builds of the deck I am featuring and hope that you can make use of them. Those of you that are regulars to my deck garage article may have noticed that last week I skipped out on the usual rant. Well this week I have a perfect target for my rant and its all about the wonderful card called Skullclamp. So I say unto you that have come for the deck fix and the free deck lists, if you want to read the fix skip the next paragraph, so that you don’t have to here me rant. For those of you that are wanting to have me take a look at your deck list or answer you magic questions email me at pojojason@hotmail.com and I will try to get back with you this week. I managed to get over 90% of the emails answered so feel free to talk with me.

I pose this question to you. What is the most used card in Darksteel? If you answered anything but Skullclamp then I hate to wake you up from you ever so pleasant dream. Yes it’s a world gone mad where we got what we wanted but didn’t know better. We got an artifact that was playable, tournament viable, and in a rarity slot to where everyone could get it. People complained that we couldn’t get a good artifact and that the days of power cards were gone but here we are. German regionals was the first major Standard Constructed tournament that we got to see what the meta game would look like and in the top eight there were 20 copies of Skullclamp. Now I don’t have personal access to the all the deck list from Germany but I do dare to guess that the number of Skullclamps there probably out numbered at least on basic land type. Skullclamp is a good card and is actually border line great. I consider it one of the most likely cards for a banning in a long time. So some of you send me some of your opinions on what you think about Skullclamp should it be banned? Does it have too much hype? Am I full of poop? Send me you thought at pojojason@hotmail.com and I will share them with the audience. Well enough of that rant, on to the deck fix.

The deck that I received was from reader Pierce Kuhnell and it’s an affinity deck that is very close to being a build of what we call Ravager Affinity. The Arcbound Ravager deck or Ravager Affinity as it is called works by using the Affinity mechaninc to get out fast creatures and the interaction of Disciple of the Vault with Acrbound Ravager for additional kill. This deck is really quick out of the gate and can easily allow the player to dump his whole hand on to the board as quick as turn two or three. I myself have been playing this deck and have killed on turn three and four when the hand allowed for it. it’s a deck that is able to also abuse the card from my rant Skullclamp. You can build up card advantage by equipping you artifact creatures and sacrificing them to the Arcbound Ravager and that’s when the deck can really start to get unfair. So here is Pierces email and then the build that I supplied for him.

I am trying to make an aggro affinity deck to play in tournaments with as well as with my friends. The main way to kill anyone is just by sacrificing artifacts to disciples of the vault and running people over with atogs.

Creatures:

3 Frogmite

3 Myr Enforcer

3 Atog

2 Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer

2 Ornithopter

4 Disciple of the Vault

Other:

4 Welding Jar

4 Thoughtcast

3 Scale of Chiss-Goria

3 Tooth of Chiss-Goria

4 Pyrite Spellbomb

2 Shrapnel Blast

4 Skull clamp

3 Chromatic Sphere

Land:

4 Vault of Whispers

4 Seat of the Synod

4 Great Furnace

4 Darksteel Citadel (would be glimmervoid if I had them)

Sideboard:

2 Flashfires

2 Boil

4 Detonate

2 Bonesplitter

2 Broodstar

3 Electrostatic Bolt

This is the version that I would chose to build from your deck list. Now I know that Pierce said that he uses the atog to kill his opponent and the Arcbound Ravager adds another way to kill his opponent. I removed the Slobad the Goblin Tinkerer so that more of the effective creature like Frogmite and Myr Enforcer could be used in fours. I removed the Scales to make room for the Arcbound Ravager although the Scales of Chiss-Goria can be good for combat tricks.

Jason’s Deck Garage version of Pierces deck

4 Frogmite

4 Myr Enforcer

4 Arcbound Ravager

2 Atog

2 Ornithopter

4 Disciple of the Vault

The Sideboard changes were made with the idea that if the deck was used for a tournament, it would be better to have a few more answers for the current metagame.

Sideboard:

3 Flashfires

3 Detonate

3 Shatter

4 Electrostatic Bolt

2 Furnace Dragon

Per the norm I have included a few more deck list that are similar but different than my build. They are here for your enjoyment and I believe that it will be the deck to beat at this years regionals. I hope that you enjoyed this weeks article and look forward to receiving you emails at pojojason@hotmail.com don’t forget to send me you decklist and questions. Next week I will hopefully be bringing you a casual deck list and maybe even a few more tournament decks form Germanys Regionals. Until then may all you opening hands be keepers.
