Black/Green in
IBC
A comment about my last article, Phyrexian Arena is a really good card, but I don't know that mono black in this format can support it. Soul Burn is your best way to gain life and its not that good. The burn in the set is also very good and makes it very dangerous for you to lose too much life too quickly. Arena is probably going to be only accessible in W/B but extremely good in that deck. I'm also glad I'm finally done with single color strategies. I tried my best to stay to mono colors, and even stayed away from the Volvers (which I might not do in two color design). Today we go to dual color strategies, and start with a rather vicious thing, green/black. Last block season, Snuff-O-Derm bashed over opponents left and right, and I think that Apocalypse has added some serious beef to the set that might make it worth a look (namely Spirit Monger, Ebony Treefolk, and Pernicious Deed). Of course the first deck we'll look at is beatdown. We have two decks that come instantly to mind, Elves and Zombies. And in any beatdown we're going to start with 4 Ebony Treefolk (they are just sick), and 4 Phyrexian Scuta, equally as good. Spirit Monger is really good, but we'll see how many we need. Let's start with elves and the creature base we'd want. 2cc 3cc 4cc That's 24 solid creatures. Nomadic Elf and Quirion Sentinel don't exactly scream 'amazing' to me, but then again this is a 'theme' deck you know. They also do smooth out the mana quite consistently. I haven't even used Spirit Monger in this deck because you should be able to just punish hard and fast with this deck. Drop the quick elbow before the opponent can set up. When you are going with a weenie design that focuses primarily on green (which this deck does) you want to use creature pumpers. The best that are available are Wax/Wane and Explosive Growth. Consume Strength is also a possibility especially if creature-based decks become more popular. I think in this deck we want 22-23 land, and we'll start at 23 and see how that goes. That allows for 13 other cards to work with. I think that these slots are going to be determined by the metagame. For an unknown metagame we'll go with utility. These decks make me wish that Vendetta was still around. Considering the cheapest current removal is Agonizing Demise, we'll remove creatures by making our opponents block so that they can live another turn. B/G Elves 2cc 3cc 4cc Land The Zombie deck will be fairly similar but with a higher emphasis on black instead of green. Because there is a lack of good zombies in mono black though, the deck looks a bit weaker than the elf deck. You also have no access to white so Wax/Wane is not as good, and this deck is less about bears than it is about control. I want to be able to use Strength of Night as it seems appropriate for this design. Its probably crap but we'll see. B/G Zombies 3cc 4cc 5cc Land Even though you don't have as many bear zombies, you do have recurring Scutas, which is quite good. Because the mana curve is a bit higher, I've gone up to 24 land. It could probably get away with 23 and the elf deck with 22 but that is something playtesting is necessary for. And for a more controllish design not based on elves or zombies. Bog Down is probably good enough to be in any of these decks, but we'll use this deck to try it out. Jade Leech also makes an appearance because we're using less Bears and more beatdown. 2cc 3cc 4cc 5cc Land With the appearance of Pernicious Deed, G/B control is going to be something that people are going to try. I think that B/R/G is going to be much more viable so I'll cover a Deed deck then. In my next installment we'll talk about what it takes to make an elf fly when we get to G/U. Until then, Fletcher Peatross
