More Questions...

Q: My opponent is at 1 life and I have 4 enchantments in play. My opponent plays Multani's Decree and in response I Shock him for 2. What happens?

-Igo

A: Since the Shock resolves before the Decree, he dies.

---

Q: What is the exact ruling on the Wish cards? Do you actually have to say the card your wishing for before choosing from your sideboard, or may you search through your sideboard after the wish resolves and choose from there?

A: The only thing you declare when you cast a spell are targets and modes. Since the card you are wishing for is neither of those, you tell what you are getting when the Wish resolves.

---

Q: If I Corrupt a creature with toughness of 3 for 6 damage, do I only gain 3 life?

-Henry N.

A: No. Corrupt is doing 6 damage, so you gain 6 life. If the card wants to put a limit on the life you can gain, IT WILL SAY SO. (See Drain Life for an example.)

---

Q: I'm playing against Wirewood Superman. My opponent gets Pemmin's Aura on Wirewood Channeler but doesn’t have any cards in his hand. He says that he can kill me by making his Wirewood Channeler like 1000/0, then put combat damage on the stack...

-Joseph K.

A: This is incorrect. As soon as the creature has a toughness of 0, it will be put into his graveyard. This will be long before damage can be put on the stack.

Tournament Report - FNM - Diamond Bar, CA

Well, there's finally a viable combo deck in the format. I love combo decks, so guess what I'm going to be playing the next 2 months?

(Note: there's a problem with this first deck list - it only has 59 cards. See the bottom of the article for a correct/updated decklist.)

Secret Desire

by: Oliver Ruel, European Championships

11 Island

10 Forest

4 Wild Growth

4 Trade Secrets

4 Sleight of Hand

4 Mind's Desire

4 Careful Study

2 Temporal Fissure

2 Cunning Wish

2 Nostalgic Dreams

3 Early Harvest

3 Chain of Vapor

4 Rampant Growth

1 Far Wanderings

1 Flash of Insight

Sideboard:

3 Envelop

2 Future Sight

1 Mana Short

4 Counterspell

1 Early Harvest

1 Stifle

1 Moment's Peace

1 Chain of Vapor

1 Brain Freeze

I changed a few things: First, I subconsciously thought there was a Harvest in the board, when Oliver ran all 4 main. That's where my 59 card problem came in. Also, I didn't know what the Future Sights were in there for, so I cut them to 2 from 4, and I only had 1 Mana Short, and felt I needed countermagic in the board, so I cut 2 Sights and one Short for 3 more Counterspells. Second, as a result of my unconsciously putting a Harvest in the board when it shouldn't have been, the Hibernation was left out.

Round 1 - Ben H. - Beasts

Or, one of the absolute best matchups possible.

Game 1 - He wins the roll, and chooses to play. He gets out a turn 1 Llanowar Elf, followed by a turn 2 face down Angel. He flips it the next turn, and beats me with it for 2 turns. He drops some more creatures when I'm at 9, so I have to go off. I get up to 11 spells, and show him the wish, along with a removed Mind's Desire (from another Desire). He scoops.

Sideboard: Nothing.

Game 2 - Ben mulligans once. He gets out a turn 2 Mongrel, which puts the kibosh on Trade Secrets. I Chain of Vapor the Mongrel, and Trade Secrets on turn 4. I go off, casting something like 20 spells, and Wish for a Harvest somewhere along the way.

Games: 2-0, Matches: 1-0

Round 2 - Kai (no, not him) - UG

Game 1 - I win the roll, and mulligan once before we start. He starts off slow, and about 5 turns into the game, I see I have an opening. He leaves one blue mana open, so I bounce his madness outlet (Aquamoeba) at end of turn. I cast a couple of spells, and then cast Cunning Wish to go get the Early Harvest. Only it's not there. I originally count a 13 card sideboard, so I tell him he's won the first game. I had 14 there though, as after I put the Harvest back, it counts 15. I then count my deck, and it is 59 cards. I pull the deck apart on the table, and can't remember what's missing. I chalk it up to a listing error on the internet, and get to insert an Island to make 60.

All this time, he's arguing that I should receive multiple game losses, since I both have failed to desideboard, and have an illegal deck. This is very classless, as even at most high level events, they group all the penalties under 1 and take the most severe of the punishments that any of them could have had individually.

Matt (who is our head judge tonight) shows incredible restraint in not giving this guy an Unsporting Conduct penalty, as his arguing for me to receive a further penalty, even after Matt has handed down the penalty, is clearly spelled out as Unsporting Conduct in the Penalty Guidelines.

Sideboard: In: 4 Counterspell. Out: 2 Chain of Vapor, Temporal Fissure, Trade Secrets.

Game 2 - is rather anticlimactic, as I only draw a Sleight for card drawing and 2 Rampant Growth, I see nothing to speed up a Mind's Desire. He's holding 2 Logics to boot.

Games: 2-2, Matches: 1-1

Slops also go to the guy who comes up to the table while we were playing game one and starts to very loudly talk about paintball and refuses to stop, even when asked.

Round 3 - Philip S. - Elves

Apparently, Philip has gotten away from his trademark discard deck, and has picked up a more traditional deck. It sports multiple one-ofs and stuff like Giant Growth and Might of Oaks.

Game 1 - He wins the roll, but chooses to draw first. This isn't unusual for him, so I ask why. He says he just prefers the extra card.

He gets me down to 3 by turn 4, and I cast a couple of spells before deciding it'd be better if I Wished for Moment's Peace and had a couple of turns to build back up. I do, and try to go off again. I fail to find a Desire or Dreams at the 9 Spell mark, so I Temporal Fissure his board. He casts a dude, and I go off again.

During the process of my going off the third time, Kai comes over and starts questioning my count of spells played that turn. Matt is right there and verifies my count, and since I am sick and tired of that SOB, I request that he be removed as a spectator from the match. Matt shrugs, and apologizes to him for making him go away.

Frankly, I would have rather told him to go the f*** away at that point, and mind his own d*** business, but that would have been Unsporting of me.

The third attempt at going off is successful, as I hit the 9 spell mark, and Desire into another Desire, and Philip scoops.

Sideboard - Nothing.

Game 2 - He mulligans once before I start. I do the same thing as in game 1 - I cast a couple of spells, and wait a couple of turns by Wishing for Moment's Peace. The second attempt at going off is successful this time, as I get multiple Harvests and Desires.

Games: 4-2, Matches: 2-1

Round 4 - John - Elves

Game 1 - I win the roll and play first. He hits me hard, and forces me into the Wish/Peace plan instead of trying to go off, as I see I can't. After the Peace is gone, I go off, and get up to 22 spells before I cast the Brain Freeze.

Sideboard: Nothing.

Game 2 - He beats down on me rather quickly, and forces me to try to go off early. I manage to make the first Mind's Desire for 5, but when I flip 3 land, Nostalgic Dreams, and Wild Growth, and am tapped out, that's game.

Game 3 - I manage to live until turn 6, as he doesn't have enough pressure. It's rather academic at that point, as my first Desire is for something like 9, and I get up to 40 spells before casting Brain Freeze. I tell him to hold on, and ask to look at the current standings.

Unfortunately, Reporter doesn't calculate tiebreaks in the provisional standings before the 5th round (actually, the end of the 4th, but it doesn't at the time I'm looking at them nonetheless), so I can't really see who is most likely to miss top 4 out of the 3-1's. So I resolve the Brain Freeze and wait for the other matches to finish.

Games: 6-3, Matches: 3-1

It turns out that I am the one that misses top 4. Oh well...

Changes to the deck: 2 Temporal Fissures in the main is one too many. I appreciate having one there, for a combo failure backup plan, but 2 is one too many. The Harvest needs to come back into the main, and I need the full 4 Future Sights for U/G, and both Mana Shorts for anything with counterspells. I'm going to replace the second Fissure with a third Wish, as that was what I wanted most often. I'd really love some Wishable card drawing in the board, but neither Opportunity nor Read the Runes works as a Wishable target.

So that makes our current deck list:

Secret Desire

by: Oliver Ruel

11 Island

10 Forest

4 Wild Growth

4 Trade Secrets

4 Sleight of Hand

4 Mind's Desire

4 Careful Study

1 Temporal Fissure

3 Cunning Wish

2 Nostalgic Dreams

4 Early Harvest

3 Chain of Vapor

4 Rampant Growth

1 Far Wanderings

1 Flash of Insight

Sideboard:

3 Envelop

4 Future Sight

2 Mana Short

1 Hibernation

1 Stifle

1 Moment's Peace

1 Chain of Vapor

1 Counterspell

1 Brain Freeze

I might end up pulling a Chain of Vapor or the Far Wanderings for a 4th Wish, but we'll see what happens next week first. Hunting Pack might be nice too, but it is unnecessary at this point.

See you Thursday.
