Here...Kitty Kitty... Before we get started, a note for my column, coming up in a couple of weeks. We are now 11 days out from Grand Prix: Los Angeles, which I will be judging at. I plan on being there from Friday (the 22nd) at about noon (for setup), until late Sunday night (the 24th). As a result, the columns for that next week (which is also Thanksgiving week) will change. I will only have one column that next week, on Wednesday (the 27th). Again, if you are at GP: LA, come say hi to me. I will be on the tournament floor when I am not sleeping, doing many things. Among them, I will be head judging the Type 1 side event on Saturday. Now, on to the questions… --- Q: How do Mana Echoes and Firecat Blitz interact? Specifically, how much mana is produced if I have the Echoes in play and resolve a Blitz for 5? -Sam Valentine A: Mana Echoes {2}{R}{R} Enchantment Whenever a creature comes into play, you may add {1} to your mana pool for each creature you control that shares a creature type with it. The triggers from Mana Echoes don't go on the stack until all 5 Cats come into play. Assuming there are no other creatures of type Cat in play, and assuming all the Cats stay in play until all the triggers resolve, you can add anywhere from 0 to 20 mana to your pool, in multiples of 4. (Each trigger resolves separately, and for each trigger, you can add 4 mana to your pool, or you can choose not to. So for all 5 triggers, that gets you anywhere from 0 to 20 mana, in multiples of 4.) --- Q: My friend had Astral Slide and I had a creature out with Elephant Guide on him and he cycled Barren Moor. He then decided to target my creature with the Elephant Guide on it so it would be removed from the game. So we argued about if I get an Elephant token or not. Would I? -Mickey B. A: Elephant Guide {2}{G} Enchant Creature Enchanted creature gets +3/+3. When enchanted creature is put into a graveyard, put a 3/3 green Elephant creature token into play. The creature leaves the game, and then the Elephant Guide falls off (as a state-based effect). Since the creature didn't go to the graveyard, you don't get an Elephant. --- Q: My friend has creatures in play totaling 10 power (Elves), and I am at 7, and there is no way I can survive another attack so I drop Transcendence. He then attacks with everything, and I don't block. I say I won't lose because the cards say that I won't lose whenever my life is less than 0. Then he says whenever I lose a life I'll gain 2 life and the total damage he deals is 10, so I'll gain 20 life, and Transcendence also states whenever you have 20 life or more you lose the game. But I told him that those are just damage not a lose of life, lose of life is unpreventable and damage can be prevented, so I'll take 10 damage, and then gain 20 life, putting me at 17, so I won't lose. Who's right? -bahamut o. A: You are correct. Note, however, if the same thing happens next turn, you will be at 27, which is over 20, so you will lose. The damage is dealt first, causing you to lose 10 life. (As the reminder text on Transcendence says, "Damage dealt to you causes you to lose life.") That puts you at -3. Then Transcendence triggers, and you gain 20 life, putting you at 17. You are not over 20 life, so you are fine, for the time being. --- Q: If your opponent has a Meddling Mage in play naming Exalted Angel, can you play the Angel for its morph cost and then morph it to get around the Mage's ability? A: From the Onslaught FAQ: * The Planeshift card Meddling Mage can't prevent a card from being played face down. So your answer is yes. --- Q: Does morphing a creature trigger comes into play effects? For example, if I morph a Hystrodon while I have a Wirewood Savage in play, do I draw a card? A: 502.26d: …Any abilities relating to the permanent coming into play don't trigger when it's turned face up and don't have any effect, because the permanent has already come into play. So no, you don't draw a card. --- Q: If I play Humility, followed by Castle, do my creatures get the +0/+2 because the timestamp of the Castle is later than that of the Humility? A: Yes. (Finally, an easy Humility question. :)) --- Q: If there is a Pandemonium in play and a Humility, when I play a Grizzly Bear, does it do 2 damage or 1? A: 1 damage. The Grizzly Bears come into play with the Humility effect already on them, so they are 1/1. --- Q: Does it matter who controls the Humility and Pandemonium? A: No. --- Q: When a card counts the number of something in play, does it count upon casting/tapping or upon resolution? A: In general, unless it is a targeting requirement, only upon resolution. (A spell like "Destroy target creature with toughness less than or equal to the number of Clerics in play" would check both on announcing and resolution, because the creature would have to have toughness less than or equal to the number of Clerics in play to be able to be targeted by that spell. But in your questions, you would only check upon resolution.) --- Q: For example, if I have a Wellwisher and Llanowar Elf, and in response to me tapping the Wellwisher, my opponent Shocks my Llanowar, do I gain 1 life or 2? A: 1. The Llanowar Elf is gone by the time Wellwisher's ability resolves, so there's only one elf in play. --- Q: Or, my opponent has two Apprentice Wizards and I cast Lightning Bolt at my opponent. He then plays Ixidor's Will. In response to the will, I Shock one of the Wizards, and the Wizard dies. Do I have to pay 2 or 4 for the Will? A: You have to pay 2. --- Q: What is the official tournament rule for an illegal card play? For example, I try to Lightning Bolt my opponent's untargetable Deadly Insect. What happens? -Ryan A: You would back up to just before you announce the Lightning Bolt spell. The card would go back in your hand. It depends on when you tapped for mana on whether or not the mana comes out of your pool. If you tapped the land for R, then played the Lightning Bolt, you would have R in your pool, and the land would stay tapped. If you announced Lightning Bolt, and then tapped for R (as part of playing Lightning Bolt), the land would untap and the mana would come out of your pool. --- Q: One of my opponents plays Read the Runes and sets X equal to 4. No one responds to it and he draws 4 cards. This opponent then sacrifices an Island. I point out that according to my interpretation he needs to sac 3 more permanents to avoid discarding cards from his hand but he says that the card tells him to discard as many cards as he drew unless he sacs a permanent and that his single island satisfies the card. Is his interpretation right or is mine? -Ledian Warrior A: Read the Runes {X}{U} Instant Draw X cards. For each card drawn this way, discard a card from your hand unless you sacrifice a permanent. The "discard a card or sac a permanent" applies to each card he drew. Therefore, he has to discard a card or sac a permanent 3 more times. --- Q: I attack with my Undead Gladiator. My opponent casts Spiritualize. Not wanting my opponent to draw a card, I smother my own Gladiator. My opponent states that he still gets to draw a card. I say because I have removed the target of his spell, his spell is countered and therefore none of the spell's abilities occur, so he wouldn't draw a card. Am I right? -Raymond M. A: You are correct. --- Q: Harvester Druid's ability reads "T: add one mana to your mana pool that a land you control could produce". What if I had say, a Bog Wreckage in play? The Wreckage has an ability that says "T, sacrifice Bog Wreckage: add to your mana pool one mana of any color". Can I play the Harvester Druid's ability, adding one mana of any color to my mana pool, since the Bog Wreckage can produce any color when sacrificed? -Chris A: Yes. --- Q: I have a Mirari in play, and I try to play a Corrupt. In response my friend counters the Corrupt, but I Mirari the Corrupt, so there is another Corrupt on the stack. Does the Corrupt deal damage if no other actions are done? A: The Mirari'd Corrupt deals the damage, yes. From the Odyssey FAQ: * The copy will be the same as the original spell, except that you can choose different targets for it if you want to. If the original spell is countered, that has no effect on the copy. --- Q: And if I cast a Skeletal Scrying for 4, losing 4 life, removing 4 cards from my graveyard to out of game pile, and drawing 4 cards, if I Mirari this spell, will I lose 8 Life, remove 8 Cards, and draw 8 Cards? -Rob A: No. You will only remove 4 cards, but you will lose 8 life and draw 8 cards. You don't have to pay the additional costs the second time. --- Q: I was wondering, if I were to Corpse Dance a creature such as Mogg Fanatic, then sacrifice it to deal 1 damage, would I have to remove it from the game? -KDCnoone A: No. At end of turn, since the Fanatic is no longer in play, the remove effect from Corpse Dance won't be able to find it. --- Correction: Q: I suppose you'll get a hundred mails like this, but anyways: This is from the "More on Morph" article. A: Actually, yours was the only mail I got on it. I don't mind multiple mails on the same error, folks. It helps. And if you are the only one that sends it in, that's fine too. --- >>>Q: My opponent has Astral Slide in play, during my end turn he cycles a card and target my Rootwalla, but he says that I can only return the Rootwalla in to play at end of my next turn. Is this correct? A: Astral Slide {2}{W} Enchantment Whenever a player cycles a card, you may remove target creature from the game. If you do, return that creature to play under its owner's control at end of turn. He is correct.<<< C: I suppose you meant to say: It is not. It returns at the end of any "end of turn" which would be your opponent's unless there's some Time Walk action going on. -Thomas S. A: That's what I meant. Another example of me trying to give a brief answer, and screwing it up in the process. --- Tournament Report - FNM - Orange, CA - 5th place Well, I was still unable to get the cards I needed for the other deck. So I make the changes noted in last Monday's column, and the deck is as follows: U/G Madness, V8.1 2 Aquamoeba 4 Arrogant Wurm 4 Basking Rootwalla 3 Merfolk Looter 4 Wild Mongrel 3 Wonder 4 Aether Burst 4 Careful Study 4 Circular Logic 2 Counterspell 2 Deep Analysis 3 Roar of the Wurm 1 Centaur Garden 4 City of Brass 7 Forest 10 Island Sideboard: 4 Compost 2 Krosan Reclamation 4 Naturalize 3 Phantom Centaur 2 Sylvan Safekeeper Round 1 - Adam Crum - Beasts Game 1 - I win the roll, 10-4, and play first. I take plenty of pain from my Cities, since I draw no Islands, and end up at 11 this game. He tries to Fever Charm me first turn, but I point out that he has to hit a Wizard. I make a mistake in the game. I've pitched Wonder, and attack with 2 Dogs. He blocks and kills one, as I remember I have no Islands in play. I end up Aether Bursting his 2 creatures on his last end step, and coming over with a Wurm token and a Dog for the kill. Sideboard: Nothing. The only thing I thought about siding in were the Safekeepers, and I remembered the Safekeepers are Wizards, so I didn't change anything. Game 2 - He chooses to draw first. I get the nuts draw, as I go turn 2 Looter, turn 3 Loot out an Arrogant Wurm, and Loot at the end of his next turn, and draw an Arrogant Wurm. Games: 2-0, Matches: 1-0 Round 2 - John - Mana Madness (G/W) Game 1 - I win the second roll, 4-1, after we tie at 4, and I play first. He gets out a bunch of Elves, and Mirari's Wake. I try to damage him, but only take him down to 5, while he untaps with his Kamahl and Llanowar Elf on his side of the board. He starts to think, and I reach over, tap his lands to activate his Kamahl twice, and send his Kamahl and Llanowar Elf my way, for 19. I was at 17. (I didn't notice the Llanowar Elf he didn't block with on his last turn, or I wouldn't have pumped my Walla with my City of Brass, and instead cast the other Dog in my hand. Such is life.) Sideboard: In: 4 Naturalize. Out: 2 Counterspell, 1 Merfolk Looter, 1 Aquamoeba. Game 2 - I play first. I Counter his Wake, and Naturalize his Vernal Bloom, and he doesn't get off the ground. Game 3 - He goes first. The big story of this game was his double mulligan. When he drew 5, he actually drew 7, but I just had him put the other 2 back. He casts turn 2 CoP: Green. I swing with my Mongrel, and pitch Wonder to change the Dog's color. I Madness out an Arrogant Wurm the next turn. He attacks with his elves, and I madness a second Wurm to block the next turn. He goes to put the Elf I blocked in the graveyard, but I put it back out on the table, and tap his Wellwisher to give him 4 life, and then put the Elf in the grave. The next turn, I either Counter or Naturalize a Wake, and Naturalize his CoP: Green, pitching my hand for the kill. Games: 4-1, Matches: 2-0 Round 3 - Kha - Astral Slide Game 1 - He wins the roll, 18-5, and plays first. I Study an Analysis into the grave, and cast it after a Dog. He gets his Slide and Rift into play, and Wishes for a Wrath. I counter the first one, but he has another, and my team goes away. I hard cast an Arrogant Wurm, and he casts a Faithful. He cycles, and removes his Faithful, giving him 4 more life to play with. I hard cast a Roar. He doesn't have another cycling card, and I Aether burst his Faithful and come over with the Wurm for the win. Sideboard - In: 4 Naturalize. Out: 1 each of Careful Study, Aquamoeba, Merfolk Looter, and Deep Analysis. Game 2 - He plays first. I get an early start on him, but he has the Akroma's Vengeance to clear the board. I get an Arrogant Wurm, but he is able to use Lightning Surge to kill it, then me. This ends the skill based portion of my tournament. All of the wins or losses from here are pretty much luck based. Sideboard - In: 2 Sylvan Safekeeper. Out: 2 Counterspell. Game 3 - He goes first. I mulligan my first hand, because it isn't aggressive enough. He drops Mountain, Mountain, misses a land drop, Forgotten Cave, and Mountain. He also dropped a Lightning Rift in there, which I promptly Naturalized. Notice the missing color? I drop 2 Dogs and a Safekeeper over the first few turns, and go to town. Round 4 - David Lau - Mirror Match Game 1 - I lose the roll, 16-1. In addition, I get no cards that are able to damage him, and he gets Wonder. Sideboard - In: 2 Krosan Reclamation, 2 Sylvan Safekeeper, 3 Spellbane Centaur. Out: 3 Merfolk Looter, 2 Deep Analysis, 1 Arrogant Wurm, 1 Counterspell. Game 2 - I mulligan twice. I miss my third land drop, and he counters my Spellbane. I just scoop here. Games: 6-3, Matches: 3-1 Round 5 - Brent - Mono Black Game 1 - He wins the second roll, 19-8, after we tie at 11, and plays first. He drops Swamp, Swamp, Coffers … and then stops. I get Dog, Looter, and Arrogant Wurm, and go to town. Sideboard - In: 4 Compost. Out: 2 Counterspell, 1 Arrogant Wurm, 1 Aquamoeba. Game 2 - He plays first again. This time, he is only able to go Swamp, Coffers, before missing several land drops. By the time he puts his second Swamp down, I've got Compost and board position. Games: 8-3, Matches: 4-1.
