For our lead today, we turn to our faithful error
corrector, Chris Richter, of MTGNews.com fame, with an
error from my last column. Chris?

That is incorrect. When you play a spell the first step
is to announce it and put it on the stack. You do not
choose targets until later in the announcement process.
When you choose targets for this Coffin Purge, the
Coffin Purge is on the stack and not in the graveyard
and not a legal target. It does not matter that this
Coffin Purge is played by paying it's Flashback cost,
the process for playing it remains the same. The fact
that you played it by paying its Flashback cost will end
up removing it from the game, but that is not what the
question concerned.

I had to go take a second look at the rules myself for
that one. He is correct ... the first thing that happens
when you play a spell card is it is put on the stack.
Thanks, Chris.

Now, on to our other questions ...
---
Q: Sacrificing directly puts a creature into the
graveyard, right, because its paying a cost?
A: If a sacrifice is required to pay the cost of a spell
or ability, then it happens when you play the spell or
ability. If it is part of the resolution of a spell or
ability (for example, Barter in Blood), the creatures to
be sacrificed are chosen on resolution.

Q: I have a Raging Goblin and a Clickslither in play, I
sacrifice Raging Goblin to Clickslither, in response, my
opponent casts Shock on my goblin, what happens?
-Jack C.
A: Your opponent has made an illegal play. Sacrificing
the goblin is a cost of playing Clickslither's ability,
so once the ability is announced, it is no longer there.
Thus, it can't be targeted by Shock.

Q: If Quicksilver Fountain leaves play, do lands with
flood counters on them remain islands?
A: Yes. (Mirrodin FAQ)
---
Q: Also, do effects that trigger off cycling use the
stack, from cards like Solar Blast and Astral Slide?
A: Yes. An effect that triggers off cycling creates an
additional effect that goes on the stack on top of the
cycling.
---
Q: If so, why can cycling be Stifled if cycling is
faster than instants?
-Junwei H.
A: Cycling is not "faster than instants". In fact,
cycling is an instant speed activated ability. Since it
is an activated ability, it is a legal target for
cycling.
The only abilities that are played that don't use the
stack (and that you might say are "faster than
instants") are:
1) Mana Abilities. (411)
2) Turning a creature face up (via either Morph or
Illusionary Mask).
All other abilities that are played use the stack, and
can be responded to.

Q: I was playing in a deadlock game with my friend who
had a Platinum Angel out. I had out a Phage The
Untouchable. If I damaged him with Phage, what would
happen. He was already below zero life.
-Mike
A: The triggered ability that states "(he) lose(s) the
game" generated by Phage would resolve. This would be
replaced by a null state, since Platinum Angel prevents
him from losing the game. So the game would go on.
See you Tuesday.
