Penumbra-late
Hello everyone, welcome
to my newest article in my GREAT(ha!) series. Today I
will be discussing some new decks for the new type 2
with apocalypse. The first deck is one that someone
told me about in an e-mail. However, they did not offer
a decklist, and I could not find one anywhere. It
seems to have a lot of potential, and I think that it
could do quite well.
This is a mainly green
deck, and this decklist is completely my creation. The
idea of the deck is to use a lot of mana to accelerate
out a couple of Penumbra creatures, and then
Obliterate. The result is you having a couple of beefy
creatures on the board and them not being able to do
anything about it. They're lands, creatures and
artifacts will all be nuked, and you can then go for
the win. I created this decklist from my excellent
(chuckle) deckbuilding abilities, so I am SURE that
there will be a lot of changes made to it. Here it is:
Creatures
4X Birds of Paradise
4X Llanowar Elves
4X Vine Trellis
4X Penumbra Bobcat
4X Penumbra Kavu
3X Penumbra Wurm
4X Blastoderm
Spells
4X Obliterate
2X Heart of Ramos
4X Saproling Burst
Lands
4X Karplusan Forest
4X Rishadan Port
15X Forest
Now, this is what I would call
version 0.1. Maybe it's not quite that bad, but it
seems really good. Sadly, I have not had enough time
to test the deck out, but it probably holds it's own.
It looks like it could beat Fires if it accelerates
fast enough. I know that there should probably be more
red, but the truth is that this version with a small
amount of red looks like it would work the best. I'll
now explain the cards, and why each one was used.
Birds/Elves: These are your first turn mana producers,
and they each have their own strengths. Birds produce
green and red mana, and they can block annoying
Angel's or Dragon Legends. Mr. Elf refuses to make
mana of any color but green, but, being the feisty guy
that he is, he can attack for one. This may not seem
too important, but early Elf damage can really pay off
later on in the game.
Vine Trellis: I think that this card is very
underrated, as it produces green mana AND holds off
early elves, idols and rebels. The early defense that
it provides is usually very helpful, and it also aids
in the mana acceleration.
Penumbra Bobcat: Three mana for a 2/1 usually isn't a
good deal, but this mean little guy is pretty
important to the deck. He hits for two, but the most
important thing is that his dark evil twin appears
when you obliterate, making him a worthy addition to
the deck.
Penumbra Kavu: This guy is very similiar to the Bobcat
above, but he is a 3/3. This means that he can trade
with Idols and not die to shock, making him a beefy
brawler. The fact that he swings for three only helps
him secure a spot in the deck.
Penumbra Wurm: Now we are talking. This monter is
seven mana for a 6/6 trampler that gives you a twin
when he dies! Not only does he fit the theme, but if
you have one of these babies out when you Obliterate,
the game should be over within a couple of turns.
Blastoderm: I think I might like Blasty a little too
much. Truthfully, he fits great in this deck. You can
easily get him out third turn, and by the time you are
ready to Obliterate, he will probably have faded away.
He will have done his job buy then, though.
Saproling Burst: Not only is this a fatty generating
machine, but it survives Obliterate. If you play the
burst and are holding an Obliterate, DON'T MAKE ANY
TOKENS. The one exception is if you are in a desperate
situation, such as you will die from creatures next
turn unless you can casst blockers.
Obliterate: This is what makes the deck works. For the
price of eight mana, you get to destroy all creatures,
lands, and artifacts without possibility of
regeneration. Not only that, but it can't be
countered! You will definitely want four of these in
the deck, as drawing one each game is pretty
important.
Heart of Ramos: More mana acceleration and an easy way
to get the double red mana to cast Obliterate. Since
it would be destroyed anyway, you can tap it for a
red, then sacrifice it for another red. Because of
problems with making room, I could only fit two in the
deck, though more might be neccesay to conistently
cast Obliterate.
Karplusan Forest: It produces green and red so that
you have even more of a chance to Obliterate
succesfully.
Rishadan Port: I love this card. It isn't a "must
use" card, but it will sure help in the
beginning. It will deny you're opponents mana while
you churn out creatures, and it produces mana.
Forest: Come on people!
