Magistus Chorozo – #SUDA-EN100

1 Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Monster + 1 Spellcaster monster
Must first be either Fusion Summoned, or Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by sending the correct Fusion Material Monster Cards you control to the GY. Once per turn, when a monster declares an attack: You can target it; negate the attack, and if you do, this card gains ATK equal to that monster’s ATK (until the end of this turn), then you can return that monster to the hand.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Magistus Chorozo is the newest Fusion Monster that can be used through Instant Fusion.

For the Magistus archetype, it requires a Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Monster alongside a Spellcaster monster, though you can summon this through Instant Fusion or sending the Fusion Material Monsters from the field to the grave. It is helpful when Fusion Monsters can be summoned easily with Instant Fusion or have helpful effects like this to bypass needing a Fusion Spell card. Because of its generic materials and ease of summoning because of its effect, Chorozo can be thrown into a lot of different strategies. As a Tuner and Level 4 its playability grows as a Synchro-enabling card that doesn’t have to go in the Main Deck. Within the Magistus archetype, you can make this easily with Endymion, the Magistus of Mastery, which will target itself and equip likely Artemis from the Extra Deck to himself, giving you the requirements.

Once on the field, Chorozo can pop back an attacking monster on field and gain its ATK for the rest of the turn. The obvious ability is to bounce something attacking Chorozo, gain the ATK, and hope it stays on field until the End Phase. However, you can also bounce your own monster to gain ATK and then attack with your other monsters. Within Magistus,Chorozo is the second archetype Tuner card, giving you more ammo to summon Zoroa, the Magistus Conflagrant Calamity: the archetypes one Synchro. Because of the attacking effect, you can find Chorozo in an Illusion-based strategy as they are always attacking and faking out their opponent’s within the Battle Phase.

A Super Poly target that is a Level 4 Tuner and can be a bounce effect when something attacks it or you want to give this card a boost to its ATK. Chorozo can be easily summoned regardless of how you do it and is a good extender in many decks. I think this is a card that shines best in its own archetype despite its ability to be played elsewhere, but White Forest will enjoy its support as well.

Midweek brings us to a surprising import that goes on with the Magistus lore that Konami has been expanding upon with the OCG Stories manga: Magistus Chorozo.

Chorozo is a Level 4 DARK Spellcaster Fusion Tuner with 1000 ATK and 2800 DEF. A big DEF stat for a Level 4 monster, DARK/Spellcaster is pretty great, and a Level 4 Tuner is nice to have for an Instant Fusion target. The materials are any Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Monster along with any Spellcaster monster, so technically it can be a target for Super Polymerization as well. It must first either be Fusion Summoned or Special Summoned from the Extra Deck by sending the correct Fusion Material Monster Cards you control to the graveyard. The way this work does allow you to use monsters that are being treated as Equips, which is perfect when you consider Magistus’s gimmick is to equip Extra Deck monsters to your stuff, though there are other ways to summon this via something like Fiendsmith even as long as you also run a generic Spellcaster like the Lyna Link-2. Once per turn, when the opponent’s monster declares an attack, you can target it to negate the attack to have this card gain ATK equal to that monster’s ATK for the turn and then bounce that opponent’s monster back to the hand. It’s a cute effect to negate attacks, and something running into this most likely has a lot of ATK if you have this sitting in DEF. The main selling point here is it is a Fusion Tuner that’s easy to summon and can help you with your combos, anything else was a bonus. Whether it’s Instant Fusion, Super Polymerization, or its effect, it shouldn’t be hard to get onto the field to allow you to do interesting plays. If your Deck can go through combo lines that can make use of it, it’s a decent card to run for sure, and it will be nice when we get more of the Magistus support.

I was wondering how we’d get this little guy, and it turns out it was shoved into Supreme Darkness. Today’s card is Magistus Chorozo, made to promote the Magistus manga. Chorizo is a level 4 DARK Spellcaster Fusion Tuner monster, par for course for a Magistus, so it can enable their Rank 4 and level 8 Synchro summons. Chorozo requires a Fusion, Link, Synchro, or Xyz monster and any Spellcaster as material– it’s a fairly heavy investment, though Chorozo does have an alternative summoning condition to make it a bit easier, especially if you can field Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden. Statwise, Chorozo has a poor 1000 attack, but it makes up for it with an impressive 2800 defense, which is great if you’re crazy enough to use its actual effect.

Chorozo must either be Fusion Summoned or Special Summoned with its own condition, which happens to be the main reason you play Chorozo– you can Special Summon it straight from your Extra Deck by sending the appropriate cards from your field to the Graveyard. Most Spellcaster decks, including Magistus itself, can accomplish this fairly easily with Artemis, letting you branch into combo lines that would appreciate a level 4 DARK Tuner. The most popular use of Chorozo, however, has been in White Forest, since they appreciate having a DARK level 4 monster to make Chaos Angel with Fiendsmith Engraver or either of the level 6 Synchros for both of its effects; additionally, they can use Azamina Ilia Silvia as fodder to make Chorozo and recycle or revive it later. Chorozo’s actual effect is actually not all that useful; it’s a soft once per turn effect that triggers when any monster attacks, letting you target that monster, negate the attack, boost Chorozo’s attack by the monster’s attack until the end of the turn, then optionally letting you return that monster back to the hand. I’m sure this makes sense in the Magistus manga, but as an effect in the game, it’s still just a fancy attack negate. It can stop an OTK in a pinch and you can potentially negate one of your own monsters to make Chorozo a big beater, but why would you do that? Overall, just pretend that effect doesn’t exist and appreciate it as a free-ish level 4 DARK Tuner for Spellcaster decks.

+Easily accessible Tuner body in many Spellcaster decks that enables Synchro lines
+DARK body for Chaos Angel when used with Fiendsmith hybrids
-Rather high investment especially when fused manually
-Battle effect isn’t very useful
