Neutron – Nat Tryon
Today we are going
to look at Neutron. The first thing I read when
looking at this card was “At the start of the
recovery phase, each player KOs a resource he
controls”. Did I just read that right?
Everyone has to KO a resource? Wtf? Now why
would anyone be interested in a card like this?
I thought about it a
while and this is what I came up with –
nothing. Sure it is a good way to shut down
your opponent’s recruit phase and keep them from
getting anything above a level 5 on the field,
but come on….have you even looked at his stats?
With a 7 defense this guy can’t even stand up to
the 4-drops that are out there running around
right now. Let’s not forget that we are still
giving our opponent the chance to recruit a
5-drop every turn – if this guy does not get
stunned during the course of both attack steps.
If a 5-drop hits the field when this guy is on
the field you are going to be in trouble.
(Especially if that 5-drop is Garth.) But wait,
it gets better…now not only do you have a
character that is going to get his butt kicked,
but now your opponent gets to choose which
resource to KO. It is safe to say, that if they
have a Garth on the field and used up Savage
Beatdown in the resource row, then they are
going to KO the used Savage Beatdown so that
they can retrieve it. Now wasn’t that a great
way to help your opponent win the game???
Ratings
Fearsome Five
constructed deck – 1.0/5.0 …..If your opponent
is playing Brotherhood or TT, then they are
going to love you for playing this card.
Limited –
1.0/5.0…..Loyalty, the possibility of blowing up
in your face, etc….this is probably a good card
to stay away from.

Neutron, Nat Tyron –
Talk about resource hate! Another unique ability
that the Fearsome Five has to offer. With
Loyalty you need to be running other F5
characters or at least Team-Up to get Neutron
into play. At turn 5 Neutron can be pretty
pesky.
Constructed: 3/5 - Not huge at 9/7, Neutron will
most likely be stunned by a majority of 4 drop
characters and all of the 5 drop characters.
Plot Twists to pump Def. is a must when playing
Neutron or else his power is useless when he is
stunned.
Limited: 2/5 – With Loyalty, he will be
difficult to get out with the limited amount of
F5 characters available in draft.

This guy would be a
lock for TNB decks if it wasn't for the Loyalty
requirement. As it stands, he could be the
cornerstone of some interesting weenie decks,
especially with Mammoth in the F5's corner.
However, Fearsome Five really lives and dies by
its 6 and 7 drops, so keeping yourself at 5 is
only going to let your opponent recruit their
much better 1-5 drops and pummel you into
submission. A lot of Fearsome Five characters
seem to work better in a teamup deck, and this
is one of them.
In Limited, if you got your hands on a good 6 or
7 drop, but haven't drawn it yet, then Neutron
could be a good way to stall. However, you still
need to run more F5 to be able to recruit him,
and there's not much good at 1-4 for this team,
other than Mammoth.

Neutron, Nat Tyron
When DC Origins first came out, people seemed
really big on Neutron as a control card. As time
went on, however, people slowly began to figure
out that a) Neutron has a tiny DEF for a 5-Drop,
and b) Neutron must be around at the end of turn
for his ability to kick in. Don't get me wrong,
Neutron is a decent character, but he does come
with a lot of drawbacks, including those listed
above and having loyalty to a team that seems to
have trouble operating that well.
In limited, because of the few Fearsome Five
characters that aren't rare, Neutron shouldn't
really see too much play. Honestly, I wouldn't
be too surprised if he is one of the last picks
in most Drafts, unless someone doesn't see that
big, glaring "Loyalty" on his text.
