Greater of Two Evils

Today we are going to review a card that only makes the cut in your occasional irritating doom deck (or x-men/doom control deck…if there is such a creature).  Unfortunately, in my book, the flavor text of this card is the only good thing about it.  Sure, if you are running 4 of these in your deck and you happen to play more than one to make your opponent suffer and your opponent doesn’t have a saving device at their disposal and they don’t have a copy of the targeted character in their hand and they really like the character you are targeting and…..get the picture?  O.k. so granted I wouldn’t rate this card on the level of toilet paper or fire starter, but it isn’t much farther up on the totem pole.  You know there is a problem when you have a rare card that is only selling for approximately $3 (and that is not even what it is going for on ebay).

A threshold cost of 4 for this card’s effect is way too expensive.  You could kind of compare this card’s cost to using 4 mana in Magic or tributing a monster in Yu-Gi-Oh.  If you are going to do something like that, you better make sure that the card you are using is definitely worth putting in your deck.  Your opponent knows that Finishing Move is out there lurking in the shadows so he/she has already taken the necessary precautions to get around that card….what makes you think that you are honestly going to pull this card’s effect off?

Ratings:

Doom/control constructed deck - 2.0/5.0 ……you could do so much better with some of the other control cards out there…

Limited - 2.5/5.0 ……control is hard to pull of in a limited format ….but so is just about everything else….

Anything else – 1.5/5.0 ….see above

Play only during the recovery phase. Target a player who controls a stunned character. That player KO's a stunned character he controls unless he discards two cards from his hand. A threshold cost of 4. I can see this card being played a lot more when more Spider-Friends decks see play. It seems from my limited playtesting with the Spidey Theme deck that Spider Friends Team is a discard theme. This card would have been great if the wording was "Target a stunned character" instead. With the current wording the target player chooses which stunned character he discards. Most likely it will be the stunned character that he planned on hosing anyways. Unless of course you can manage to stun his big gun only. And more than likely by turn 4 they are going to have more than 2 cards in their hand to get rid of.

I see this card having a nice effect in Limited play. With only a certain amount of cards to choose from discarded 2 cards may have a bigger impact.

This card has one of the better flavor texts: "Either you lose, or I win. Choose quickly!"

Constructed: - 2/5.

Limited: - 3/5

Paul Hagan Greater of Two Evils --

First, I need to do a small rant: unless there is another plot twist or a location involved that is trying to recover a stunned character, you only play this card if your opponent has *ONE CHARACTER*. I keep seeing people play it when they have two and are already about to KO one of them, making the card worthless. End rant.

This card is OK, but not great. It does have a somewhat high theshold cost, but it also gives you the opportunity to gun down one of your opponent's problem characters and then make it go away for good. Unfortunately, just like Finishing Move, this card's stock is way down due to the high number of Brotherhood decks packing Avalon Space Station, which makes anything with "KO" in the text a temporary solution at best. The fact that the card also gives your opponent a way out of having their character KOed makes this plot twist pretty sub-par.

In limited, I think I would play this, only on the grounds that people seem to have a lot more trouble making decisions in limited, especially when it comes to whether or not to keep a character.
