Carnage – Cletus Kasady

 

Well this is a card that had everyone’s attention…at least until they looked thoroughly.  Today we are going to take a look at the highly anticipated and extremely disappointing Carnage.

 

In the old days a 10 atk/8 def 5-drop would have been extremely awesome.  Thanks to the emphasis placed on 5-drops in this new set, it simply makes him slightly above par for the course.  He doesn’t have flight or range either, so having a +1 edge over my 5-drop is not going to worry me too much – especially when I can stun you in return.

 

This guy was highly anticipated for his effect.  That was until people realized that he gives a +2 attack to ALL other characters (that means your opponent’s characters).  Unless you have initiative on turn 5 this guy isn’t going to give you the kind of game winning advantage you want.  Sure you can load you deck with Overload if you want and then try to overload your opponent to death…but something tells me only giving your opponent’s characters +2 attack isn’t quite going to do it.

 

Ratings:

Sinister Syndicate constructed deck – 3.0/5.0 …..If you have initiative this guy will work well.

 

Limited – 2.0/5.0 …Not only does he have loyalty, but you don’t want to give your opponent a possible edge in this format.

Carnage, Cletus Kasady – One of the bigger 5 drops in MSM at 10 ATK. Carnage is definitely stunnable though with an 8 DEF. Especially when he gives other characters +2 ATK(even your opponents). Carnage does not benefit from the +2 ATK though.

His Boost ability is a little bit different in that the +3 ATK also targets Carnage. So on turn 8 Carnage can be a 13/8. Not very good if you ask me, especially since you are essentially giving a +3 ATK to all of your opponents characters.

Constructed: 2/5 – Giving your opponent + 2 ATK is not a good thing to do. Albeit your characters also get + 2, this will just help your opponent Stun you that much easier.

Limited: 2/5 – Loyalty shouldn’t be much of an issue with the abundance of SS available. Again I don’t like the fact that your opponent benefits from the +2 ATK.

Carnage is great for Aggro SS decks. His ability to give all your guys +2 ATK means that you'll be doing some massive breakthrough. On the other hand, your opponent's characters get the attack bonus too, so your guys are going to be getting stunned right back too. His boost ability is what makes him playable; if you have initiative on the turn you play a boosted Carnage, your guys get a massive +5 for that turn.
That should be enough to finish off your opponent.
10/8 is good for a 5 drop, although Loyalty rears its ugly head. Sinister Six makes that requirement a little easier to get around though. If he got his initial +2 boost, he'd be more attractive as a 12/8 on 5. As it stands, he's the lynchpin in some SS builds, but he's by no means a staple.

In Limited, giving everybody's characters the +2 boost will make for a very aggressive game, and his boost is nice if you don't manage to get your hands on an 8 drop. Loyalty isn't much of an issue in WSM events, since most of the characters fall into one of two teams. His body is fairly good though, and he will take out the other 5 drops that you're likely to see.

Paul Hagan Carnage, Cletus Kasady --

When I first looked at Carnage, I was less than impressed. He had an 8 DEF, and his ability works on *everyone*. However, after giving him more consideration, I think Carnage really is a great, quality 5-Drop...if used correctly. Obviously, you don't automatically drop him on Turn 5 if you don't have the initiative, but if you plan around all of your team getting +2 ATK (which can wind up being an extra 6-8 endurance in just one turn), then Carnage can really be a powerhouse. The only thing holding Carnage back, in my eyes, is the presence of Green Goblin, Norman Osborn for Sinister Syndicate to have in their arsenal.

In limited play, I'll use Carnage as long as I'm playing a fair number of Syndicate characters, which is easily accomplished when you are drafting Web of Spider-Man.
