Scarlet Spider – Ben
Riley
Today we are going
to look at a card that is going to make
Spider-Friends a deck to be reckoned with.
Scarlet Spider may have low attack stats for his
drop, but power isn’t the reason you are going
to put him into you Spider-Friends deck.
Scarlet Spider’s
abilities are great! First he gives all other
Spider-Friends characters a +2 attack while
attacking. Can we say breakthrough endurance
loss? Second, if you reveal this guy from your
hand your spider-man characters are no longer
unique. This is a great way to get a bunch of
spider-man characters on the field so that you
can have some real fun at your opponent’s
expense.
Bottom Line – If you
plan on running a Spider-Friends deck full of
spider-man characters, make sure you run 3-4 of
these in your deck. Otherwise, I would keep the
number of these guys down to two at most in a
spider-friends deck.
Then again it is
really too soon to say how well this guy is
going to be in action…..

constructed deck – 3.5/5.0 ….This guy is decent.
Limited – 4.0/5.0
….He gives all other SF characters a boost….that
alone works for me.

Scarlet Spider, Ben
Reilly – With Ben Reilly in your hand you can
have multiple characters named Spider-Man on
your side of the board. You see, when revealing
Scarlet Spider character cards named Spider-Man
are not unique this turn, meaning you can have
more than 1 Spider-Man in play. This is another
new ability that is introduced in Web and will
see play just seeing how popular Spiderman is.
Imagine having 2 Cosmic Spider-Man in play by
Turn 9? Drop 1 on Turn 8 and then reveal Ben
Reilly on Turn 9 and drop another one. It sounds
crazy but it could work.
Statwise, Ben ranks among the lowest ATK for 6
drops in the game. His DEF at 12 is somewhat
normal for 6 drops. His other ability which will
help Spider friends is that Ben gives other
Spider friend characters that you control +2 ATK
while attacking. The lack of Range and/or Flight
also hampers this card.
Constructed – 2/5: Don’t rely on him as your
main attacker. The best use out of him is trying
to get the best out of his abilities.
Limited: - 1/5: Chances are in draft you wont be
able to summon more than 1 Spider-Man. This
cards only hopes in draft is the +2 ATK bonus to
Spidey-friends

If any of you have read Spider-Man comics,
you'll know that the time of clones is the Time
of Which We Do Not Speak. It was horribly
written, conceived, depicted, and sometimes
drawn. And it had a lame ending. You can
understand the angst that comes with seeing this
poor era come to life again in the form of
Scarlet Spider. Fortunately, we may have gotten
a winner out of it.
Scarlet Spider is really a unique card -- it
seems mediocre in a standard Spider-Friends
curve deck, when you have the option of playing
Iceman or Nova over him. However, when you start
thinking of a deck that runs four Spider-Man,
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, four
Spider-Man, Alien Symbiote, three or four
Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man, and two or three
Spider-Man, Cosmic Suit (or whatever that ugly
thing is called), then you can see how abusing
it can really get. Imagine the fun of an army of
Spider-Clones!
In limited, I had this guy in my sealed deck and
he seemed to win me enough games. Not a first
pick, but certainly up near the top if you want
to go into Spider-Friends.
