Medallion of the Ice Barrier is our Throwback Thursday choice this week and was released all the way back in 2010…and despite that one would think it was just released recently because of Ice Barriers not being a top deck.
RoTA for the Ice Barrier archetype, any Ice Barrier monster is available to be targeted, not just Level 4 and below. With eight Main Deck monsters aboive Level 4, this is a good restriction to lose for a deck that, as previously mentioned, hasn’t had a lot going for it other than sporting a few Synchro Monsters that benefit everyone else as well.
Depending on your situation you will search out different monsters with this. A lot of set Spell/Traps your opponent has? Search out Dance Princess of the Ice Barrier and bounce back those Spell/Trap cards equal to the number of Ice Barrier cards you reveal. Need a Tuner? Search out Moon Mage, but most likely you will be searching out Georgius because of its ability to lock out the opponent’s graveyard and its Special Summon ability (despite weak DEF).
Whenever an archetype has a RoTA, you are usually playing three of it, and this is no exception. Unless you are playing an “Ice Barrier” deck that runs hardly any Ice Barrier monsters to warrant three of this card, and even then you still might to increase your shots of getting to those cards. Better now that there are better monsters for the archetype.

For fun, Throwback Thursday for the next four weeks will be the cards that received alternate arts alongside their Deck’s recent support, and for Ice Barrier that’s Medallion of the Ice Barrier.
Medallion is a Normal Spell that lets you add any Ice Barrier monster from your Deck to your hand. I think it’s telling of the power level of the original Ice Barriers that Konami thought this was fine to print. No real way to combo off with those monsters. As we got legacy support that helps the Deck actually make some plays, Medallion gets better as it searches for any of your play enablers and extenders, and it isn’t even a hard once per tur, meaning you don’t mind seeing multiples in the hand. The range of good Ice Barriers to search is pretty decent with Revealer, Mirror Mage, Speaker, Mirror Mage, General Wayne, Georgius, and so on an so on. It’s a card many archetypes would love to have, play 3 in Ice Barrier with zero doubt.

Art: 3/5 for the original and 4.5/5 for the alternate art, the new art gives a much more interesting story compared to just the medallion on the original.

Today’s a short one– to celebrate its new alternate art, this week’s Throwback Thursday card is Medallion of the Ice Barrier, a Normal Spell that you can search with Mirror Mage of the Ice Barrier and General Wayne of the Ice Barrier, though it’s pretty pointless to search it with Mirror Mage. Medallion has a single non-once per turn effect to search any Ice Barrier monster. Very plain, but it gets the job done– it’s another three copies your main starter, Revealer of the Ice Barrier, and it’s very flexible for grabbing combo pieces for emergency two-card combos. No reason not to play this card at three unless you’re super paranoid of Droll & Lock Bird (and when has that ever caused people to stop playing ROTAs?). Since it’s not once per turn, it can even be a roundabout way to search monsters using General Wayne, though from what I can see not many topping decks even play it…
