Mermail King – Neptabyss – #ROTA-EN046
2+ monsters, including a Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua monster
Your opponent cannot target WATER monsters this card points to with card effects. You can only use each of the following effects of “Mermail King – Neptabyss” once per turn. If a WATER monster(s) is sent to the GY to activate a card or effect (except during the Damage Step): You can take 1 “Abyss-” Equip Spell from your Deck or GY and either add it to your hand or equip it to this card. If this card in its owner’s possession is destroyed by an opponent’s card: You can add 1 “Atlantean” or “Mermail” monster from your Deck to your hand.

Hello Pojo Fans,
Mermail King – Neptabyss is the archetype’s first Link-3, and their second Link Monster.
Mostly generic, aside from needing at least one Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua monster, Neptabyss offers protection for your WATER monsters against targeting effects as long as Neptabyss points to them. With all three arrows pointing downward, this effect isn’t wasted. An “Abyss-” Equip Spell searcher, Neptabyss searches for you when a WATER monster(s) are sent to the grave for a WATER monster’s effect. The archetype is full of effects like that, so triggering this search won’t be tough, even with this monster needing two materials at the least. Of the search targets: each can only be equipped to a Mermail monster, gives them between 400ATK and 800ATK depending on the card you choose, and, negates a card activation of a certain type. Of the three, Abyss-scale of the Kraken may be the best because it can negate an opponent’s monster effect on the field. The other two do the same, but for Spell and Trap cards on the field, the equip is then sent to the grave. Monster effects are far more important to negate, even when considering board-wipe power from certain Spell and Trap Cards. Even though the Equip Spell won’t negate stuff like Hand Traps, it is far more applicable to the meta currently if you were going to run one of these Equip Spells.
A Link 3 paying back its owner when destroyed by an opponent’s card is appreciated as you likely put a few cards into summoning the monster. Neptabyss fetches you an Atlantean or Mermail from the Deck to your hand when being destroyed by the opponent. Any monster is better than none and while Neptabyss has 2400ATK it is likely to eventually bite the dust. This effect is a 1-for-1 and is good to see the hand disadvantage Mermail/Atlantean players used to have being dealt with by the new support.
Not sure if you are playing the searchable Equip Spells though, and even if you aren’t, Neptabyss is a good card that would fit into the Extra Deck for the archetype. The higher you go in Links for WATER, the tougher it is to find great monsters. Outside of the archetype, the only one I see being of use in Mermail/Atlantean would be Marincess Great Bubble Reef because of her banish to draw ability during the Standby Phase, and even that isn’t great. Natural progress for the archetype: have a Link 2, got a Link 3 now…maybe Link 4 coming up?

We got the Mermail Link-2 a few years ago, and now we get a new Link-3 that turns Neptabyss from a prince to a king with Mermail King – Neptabyss.
King Neptabyss is a Link-3 WATER Sea Serpent with 2400 ATK and arrows pointing Bottom Left, Bottom, and Bottom Right. 2400 ATK is fairly good for a Link-3, WATER/Sea Serpent is still good, and the arrows are great. Materials are any 2+ monsters, just as long as you include at least 1 Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua monster, which Mermails and Atlanteans are full of, so it should be easy to summon. Your opponent cannot target WATER monsters this points to for card effects, giving your boss monsters some protection, which is great. The remaining effects are each a HOPT, first triggering if a WATER monster(s) was sent to the graveyard to activate a card or effect, letting you then take an Abyss- Equip Spell from the Deck or graveyard and either add it to the hand or equip it to this card. You can search for Abyss-sting Triaina to serve as an archetypal Premature Burial to get you your WATER monsters back to keep your combo going, or on the opponent’s turn you can get to one of the Abyss-scales to negate the opponent’s cards, with Cetus negating a Trap, Kraken negating monster effects, and Mizuchi negating Spells. Either turn it can likely get you something you need, and it can even let you use mutliple negates from the Abyss-scales in a single turn. The other effect triggers if it’s destroyed by an opponent’s card while in its owner’s possession, letting you search for any Atlantean or Mermail out of the Deck, so it’s always nice when our boss monsters replace themselves. King Neptabyss here is a pretty solid card for offering protection to your WATER monsters and making good use out of your Abyss- Equips. You only need 1, since it’s an Extra Deck monster and you’re likely in trouble anyways if the 1 is outted, but still a solid 2nd Link for the archetype.

Even the prince gets an upgrade as Mermail King – Neptabyss, a Link 3 WATER Sea Serpent Link monster with classic bottom left, bottom, and bottom right arrows. It’ll take any two or more monsters as long as one of them is a Fish, Sea Serpent, or Aqua monster, so it’s not too difficult to make as long as you use Marciness Coral Anemone. Neptabyss also gets a significant stat upgrade (it would’ve been weird otherwise) for a total of 2300 attack, which is quite respectable for a Link 3.
Neptabyss will protect WATER monsters that it points to from your opponent’s targeting effects– it’s not super impactful, but it’s better than nothing considering Mermail Abyssgaios and Toadally Awesome both lack innate protection (and we all know how terrifying an untargetable Toad is after Spright format!). Notably, it’s not an Atlantean monster by name, though that’s not very relevant since it’s an Extra Deck monster anyway. Neptabyss’s first hard once per turn effect triggers if any WATER monster is sent to the Graveyard as cost to activate a card or effect, letting you either search an Abyss Equip Spell or equip it directly to Neptabyss. Obviously, it’s not difficult to trigger in Merlantean as long as you have one extender ready. Most of the time you’ll be searching Abyss-Sting Triaina, which is basically just a Monster Reborn with extra steps. However, you can also grab the various Abyss-scale Equips, giving a (mandatory) negate against your opponent– I’ve only seen Mizuchi used, but Kraken could come up as well. On turn 3, Triaina is particularly useful for going into Worldsea Dragon Zealantis for boardbreaking (probably the best usage of Neptabyss being Link 3). Netpabyss’s other hard once per turn effect is less useful, triggering if it’s destroyed by an opponent’s card to let you search any Mermail or Atlantean monster. I’m never a fan of floaters that rely on your opponent, but at least it pairs well with its protection, so your opponent will likely be forced to remove it and give you a free search before they can start breaking your board. I’m not a huge fan of it being a Link 3, but honestly with Coral Anemone it’s not a dealbreaker at all. Overall very solid card, you’ll want to make it to extend your plays and get some protection on your other endboard pieces.
+Can be either an extender or a negate
+Helps protect your unprotected boss monsters
-Link 3 is a bit steep of a requirement for what it does
-Destruction floaters aren’t great when they rely on your opponent

Art: 4/5 Neptabyss is back! And actually has a decent attack stat, unlike a certain group of fish people.
