Hello Pojo Fans,
Metamorphosis is the Throwback Thursday choice this week and one that I remember having to play against long long ago (yup, that old).
Normal Spell that allows you to trade a monster on the field for a Fusion Monster from the Extra Deck that matches the Level of the one you tributed. The play was always to use this alongside Change of Heart or Brain Control or Mind Control or Enemy Controller long before Synchro Monsters or anything else came into the game. Using this on a Goat Token gave you a free Thousand Eyes Restrict that was permanent on the field. Cyber Dragon or Catapult Turtle would turn into any negation Level 5 Fusion that you may have had rolling around in your Extra Deck, or even a Level 8 for Cyber Twin Dragon for 5600LP damage, Metamorphosis, it was a power card.
Here’s where I’d say what could happen now with Metamorphosis in 2024 but there’s just too much. There’s too many Fusion Monsters that don’t need to be Fusion Summoned to be summoned. On top of that, cheating out high level monsters is easier than ever with Pendulum Summoning and the ability to mass Special Summon in almost any archetype. Even at one, Metamorphosis would still have the capabilities of trading a Level 1 monster or Goat Token for Thousand Eyes Restrict, and while that isn’t as powerful as it used to be, you’d still suck up a monster. Metal Reflect Slime traded with Metamorphosis for Cyber End Dragon is bad enough, but with Synchro Monsters in the game as well, expanding the level pool for this card, there’s too many options for this card to be abused.
A power card then, and it would be now even with all the negation around. Most decks wouldn’t even have specific ways of searching out this card, they would just be able to activate it when they draw it and be able to take advantage. Bring it back like all the other power Spell Cards from the past and give it a format to see what happens. I could be wrong, we are at the point where Raigeki and Dark Hole are Unlimited, Change of Heart and Snatch Steal are at one, and no one cares.

Tuesday we saw the retrain, now we look at the original itself: Metamorphosis.
Metamorphosis is a Normal Spell that tributed any monster to summon a Fusion Monster from the Extra Deck (or Fusion Deck, that’s how old this card’s last printing is) with the same Level. We all know the combo back in the day to use this with a Scapegoat Token to go into Thousand-Eyes Restrict to absorb an opponent’s monster. You could also use Airknight Parshath or Cyber Dragon to summon Dark Balter the Terrible or Fiend Skull Dragon, or a Monarch to summon Ryu Senshi or Dark Blade the Dragon Knight. You also had the Demise OTK days to turn Demise, King of Armageddon or Doom Dozer into Cyber Twin Dragon to finish the game right there. Now, if the card was unbanned, I just see it becoming a race to turn a Level 5 into El Shahdoll Winda, a Level 7 into The Last Warrior From Another Planet, or a Level 10 into Naturia Exterio. Basically, how fast can you turn a regular monster into a floodgate, since this doesn’t return the summoned monster to the Extra Deck at the end of the turn. If Thunder Dragon Colossus came back, I’m sure we’d see a lot of Level 8 monsters turn into it. I wouldn’t want to imagine if this and Elder Entity Norden were legal. With all this said, you do either have to draw the card, or hope the opponent makes Triple Tactics Thrust live to search it, which means they likely already went first and established a board, which in this case I’m sure you can summon some board breaker with this. The ceiling on this card is high enough to where I don’t think we’d see it back any time soon, but you never know with Konami, and for all we know, this card would be just fine in the game (though I wouldn’t bet on that with all the options there are now).

Since we covered Mutamorphosis this week, it makes sense that this Throwback Thursday would be the big card itself, Metamorphosis, a Normal Spell infamous in retro Yugioh for quite a few reasons that lead to its eventual ban. Metamorphosis has a single non-once per turn effect to tribute any monster and Special Summon any Fusion monster from your Extra Deck with the same level. Metamorphosis was most notably used during Goat format to tribute a Scapegoat Token and summon Thousand-Eyes Restrict, which could then steal an opponent’s monster and completely turn the tide of the duel. Many players still don’t want it back with the advent of tough Fusion monsters like Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon and Destiny HERO – Destroyer Phoenix Enforcer. While it does have potential to be abused, I don’t think Metamorphosis would cause any huge issues if it were to come back– just like Mutamorphosis, it’s a situational tech that needs you to start your combo to get any value. It’s much easier to use than Mutamorphosis, but the days of turning a Goat Token into Thousand-Eyes Restrict being broken are long-gone. Should it come back? Probably not, but if it does, there is no cause for alarm! The biggest thing about Metamorphosis coming back would, of course, be that we can finally summon Neo Bubbleman again.
+Cheats out strong Fusion monsters
+Not once per turn! (Not that it helps that much)
-Doesn’t combo on its own
-The best targets are high-level Fusion monsters
